    N64 Imports!

Getting a RGB Modded N64 off our very own Speedlolita next week :-)
It is actually coming with a nice starter selection of games.

I've never imported for the N64 properly before...the console is coming with sin & punishment, which, I love, and purposely didn't finish on the VC Console (when I got near the end) for the moment which is coming, to play on original hardware with N64 Controller.
Quick question on this, I have the google translation for the start up options, just wondering is it default Easy or Normal...

Anyway, was watching a few 'Japanese Eye' videos on N64 imports earlier....
anyone throw stuff out-there for games I should look for...(Jpn or otherwise) also watched both hidden gems with metal jesus on YT.

Don't get me wrong, I start threads like this often! but, I actually enjoy reading and watching games, it may be 6 months down the line until I start picking things up :-)

    Thank You :-)

The Japanese release of Snowboard Kids 2 is a lot cheaper than it's western counterparts. There's Bangai-o as well and I think that's it for worthwhile exclusives? They do have that Wonder Project J2 game but I don't think that would be too playable without the fan translation. The US got Ogre Battle 64 which looks pretty cool. It's a bit expensive though.

As for everything else you have the original Snowboard Kids which rocks, Mischief Makers, Blast Corps, Pokemon Snap and Starfox 64. Ridge Racer 64 looks interesting as well but I haven't played that yet. The RE2 port is pretty cool but it's not essential.

US or Japan model? Presume it's had the slot tabs removed...

If you're getting S&P, you might as well get Bangia-oh as well heh. Truth be told, there aren't a huge number of must have N64 titles that didn't come out in Europe. It was pretty well supported for the classic releases, so you may find yourself re-buying a lot of titles in general if you're moving off a PAL system. Harvest Moon 64 if you're into that sort of thing. The Indiana Jones game if you're willing to pay the money for it. Ogre Battle. Snowboard Kids 2 (only because the PAL version is exclusive to Australia and stupidly expensive). Star Soldier. That's about all I can come up with.
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

I can just pick up US counterparts to PAL Classics....again, still a few off cepp and yourself I hadn't thought of :-)

There's also a lot of 3d platformers and kart type racers but none of them do anything for me. Most N64 owners seem to like them though so their probably worth checking out.

Its coming with the two Zelda games too and Mario kart, perfect dark, wave race and sm64.
I actually did see a Disney cart racer I never heard of before recently, actually looked quite nice...

Banjo-Tooie is a lot cheaper if you buy the Japanese version. Same with a lot of other games (Harvest Moon, Ogre Battle, Paper Mario, Goemon 2, Resident Evil 2, etc.), but of course then you have the language barrier.

Bomberman 64: Second Attack (baku bomberman 2) is exclusive to Japan and North America, so you might want to check that out. Bomberman 64 is also a Japan exclusive that is worth getting (if you can find it, it's pretty rare). Be careful not to get confused though - "Bomberman 64" is the Japanese title of a traditional 2D bomberman game (this is the one you want), but it's also the English name of Baku Bomberman (the first 3D bomberman game on the N64).

Custom Robo 1 and 2 are definitely worth getting, but, again, language. There's 2 puyo puyo games, but I'm not sure what they offer over the versions on every other system. I'm still looking for a copy of Tetris 64 with the biosensor (apparently speeds up the game to match your heart rate).

Basically, there are some good Japan-exclusive N64 games but most of them have big language barriers (including the small RPG library on the system, e.g., Fuurai no Shiren, Onegai Monster, Nushi Tsuri, Robot Ponkottsu, etc.). Annoyingly, most of the games that DON'T have a language barrier WERE localised, but it's worth getting the US versions of worldwide releases to avoid the ****ty PAL versions.

Susume taisen puzzle dama & puyopuyo sun 64 are fantastic puzzle games. Doubutsu no mori is also worth getting if you want to see how it started out. All 3 goemon games are worth checking out too in their original form.

Actually, I'd say that Animal Crossing is not really worth getting if you're a fan of the GC version (except as a collectors item). If it was an early, primitive version, it would be very interesting to play (like Super Mario Kart is to Mario Kart 64, for example), but it's almost the exact same game, just with fewer features and less to do. Even the graphics are highly similar. GC Animal Crossing is an updated port, not a sequel. N64 Animal Crossing is a lovely collectors item though (since a lot of people don't even know AC started on the N64, and it has a lovely name sticker for the cartridge and so on).

It also has differences that the cube version doesnt, making it interesting to play.

Bleugh.. I know that guy has found a niche on YouTube when it comes to N64, but nope, I can't stand him.

Anyway, If no-one minds me pimping, I wrote a feature about region exclusives on the N64 which might be useful:
Fointy Pinger is home to web developer Lewis Cave, who specialises in web accessibility and web standards. The site also contains pop-culture news and reviews, mostly centering around videogames.

Basically, Bangai-O and Sin & Punishment are the only real solid gold titles that are unique to Japan. But even getting the all-region games in Japanese should pleasantly surprise if you're used to PAL-o-vision. You get the non-rubbish voice acting in Starfox 64, and the likes of F-Zero X, Wave Race, Mario 64 etc. all run silky smooth and border-less.
