    Your favourite VGM arrangements/remixes

Loads of my favourite tunes are extra great because they work out of context - from simple piano arrangements, to remixes that put the track into a completely different genre or just flesh out the original tune with fuller sounds. Quality wise, it's an absolute minefield, but the good stuff is so good it's worth sifting through the sea of turds available online. Here's both ends of the spectrum to start!

Rainbow Road from Mario Kart on the Snes, piano duet.
SFCレインボーロードのBGMを弟(小2)と連弾しました。途中マリカ7のレインボーロードの月面みたいに静かなアレンジにしてみました。This is Super Mario Kart (SNES) Rainbow Road music my brother and I played on the piano. I...

There are loads of remixes of classic F-Zero tunes, but these are some of the best.

Makes me want a new F-Zero game.

It's funny when modern musicians say retro game music was "crap", when tracks like this stand the test of time amazingly well. Lots of classic compositions from the '80s & '90s are far more catchy and rocking than a lot of the bland rubbish you get these days.

                Anyway, I agree - it's breathtakingly good.

All really good. Keenhouses's performance is brilliant. I also think the Big Blue jazz edition is cool. The Mute City remix starts rocking after a while, so I enjoyed that.

There are SO many C64 music remixes (thousands!), many just released for free, that it's hard to even know where to begin sometimes, if you are new into the scene.

But here's a few of my favourites (you can stream each track using the player in the blue box in the top right corner on each page):

Synth Sample - The Stationary Ark - c64 remix by Jogeir Liljedahl. Original by Georg Feil. Released 09/09/2009. Get it at https://remix.kwed.org/remix/4215

Commando (Sound of SceneSat Edit) - c64 remix by Firestorm. Original by Rob Hubbard. Released 11/12/2009. Get it at https://remix.kwed.org/remix/4289

Nemesis the Warlock (live at The Church) - c64 remix by Reyn Ouwehand. Original by Rob Hubbard. Released 12/04/2008. Get it at https://remix.kwed.org/remix/3755 - On the last Sunday Service C64Glen requested Nemesis the Warlock. I never played it before but I knew the original track which is a great, great track. So I went for it… Bare in mind, it's just me and some loopers and I have to built everything up ...

R-Type (Return Remix) - c64 remix by Amok. Original by Chris Hülsbeck. Released 14/08/2013. Get it at https://remix.kwed.org/remix/5126 - A remix I made for the RETURN magazine (Issue 12)   Return Magazine   Homepage   Dees Productions: pretty please finish your remix...

Albedo (The 80s Mix) - c64 remix by Peter W. Original by Gilles Soulet. Released 10/09/2008. Get it at https://remix.kwed.org/remix/3916

How do they make these arranged versions of tracks? Do they take a midi file and add better instruments using modern machines instead of relying on the sound chip or do they recreate them by ear from scratch?

Some of those f zero ones sound stonking.

The vids Leon posted all state that they were recreated from memory (you can hear a few 'imperfections' in the melodies). I'm sure Keenhouse did the same with his live version. The jazz arrange I posted is from an official album, so I imagine the musicians involved either had access to manuscripts or just played by ear.

Commercial (CD) published by T, T GAME MUSIC on Mar 25, 1992 containing arrangement from F-ZERO

I recognise a couple of the western musicians featured on that album from the jazz-fusion world.

Thanks for that, still amazing either way.

I thought that it might have been like the old .mod days where people took old chiptunes and whatnot that were arranged in trackers and fed them into modern programs with high quality soundbanks and recreated the music with more oomph.

Heh, I came to post some acoustic guitar myself, as it happens. This one's kinda the other end of the spectrum.

That was pretty good indeed... although still not as fast as the version used in C4 on the SFC.
