Now I've managed to borrow a N64 off my cousin, I'm now after a Saturn.

I love 2d shooters and fighters, so would like the ultimate list, so I have something to slowly aim for.

Go, Go, Go

In the hunt - nice metal slug type shooter thats cheap-ish

and if your going to play imports, try:
Princess Crown - 2D, beautiful, and the combat sections are slightly beat-em-uppy, sort of.

Im sure everyone else can list umpteen other clasics

One of the first games you should pick up is SF Zero 3, the price of the game has rocketed recently($150ish for the RAM box version!!), but videogameimports still have the game on its own at a reasonable price and its bloody good, my favourite version;)

With regards to must haves, Big Al has listed pretty much all the ones I was going to plus more!!

However, there's a few more I can think of:

Nights
Burning Rangers
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Sega Rally
Sonic R
Sonic Jam
Virtua Cop 1+2

Can't think of any more atm!

God damit, I knew I shouldn't have sold Streetfighter Zero 3 :(

Did it come out in America by any chance?

Geezer
27-01-2004, 08:48 PM
Nope, Japan only.

VGI have a minter for ?28 and a sealed copy at ?34.99, a week or 2 ago they had at least 2 and they were ?29.99, but down to the last one, so up goes the price ;)

A copy in really substandard condition went for the equivalent of ?35 to ?40 on eBay within the last month and I was talking to mark.in.japan and the standalone(mint) is pulling in $80 to $90 a pop for him :o

Now is the time to buy ;)

I've got a mate with quite a few Japanese contacts, at one stage he was getting the likes of Zero and Elevator Action Returns for around 10 pounds a pop.

Just out of interest, I'm a huge fan of unlockable contents, what shooters should I look out for?

That list looks very much like part of my shopping list tbh, I had intended to keep my Saturn collection to 30 games or under but it's impossible, there's too many good games

How good is Metal Slug

I've never played it in the arcades or other home consoles

(Apart from on the NGPC 2nd Mission  )

PS Is Sonic R a racing game, 'n' how good is it?

Was this the game that was written by Travellers Tales and overseen by Yuji Naka

Twinkle star sprites is a brilliant game, its a VS shoot em up, where you can send attacks across the screen to your opponents side, as well as boss attacks ^_^

I personally love the game and would recommend it to anyway, shame its one of the rarer ones to get i believe... I picked up my current copy when in japan for around ?30 quid.... a friend got his on ebay for about 65.... so not sure what prices you could get,

but if ur a shoot em up fan, get this!

Buy this now! I got this on eBay for $60 delivered(Japanese seller), so a bit over ?30. It is one of the few games that I have ever felt was faultless and is a truly unique experience!
Also got the DC version on the way so I can make comparisons :D

This list is quite handy, really.

I am trying to buy myself a Saturn currently and am finding the Ebay Saturn scene a bit of a minefield. All I know is that I absoloutely adore Ikaruga, so I suppose Radiant Silvergun would be a good purchase at some point.

Clockwork Knight looks pretty nifty too. Apart from that I am pretty clueless, but this thread will no doubt help me a lot :).

I agree on the ebay minefield

But I find it curious that certain games which were released on both formats (PSOne/Saturn) can have such varied prices

eg Bubble Bobble/Rainbow Islands doesn't seem to go for less that ?20+ on the PS, I cannot imagine that the Saturn title sold in greater quantities unless the PS version was "better"

Although I know after reading on various forums/magsthat the 2d beat em ups (capcoms amongst others) are better on the Saturn due to it being a bit of a specialist in 2d games

Some average games listed on the first few pages, rated only by name I reckon (Soukyu and Kingdom GP are two that spring to mind) :p

Appalling

No-one bigged up Duke Nukem 3D, Exhumed or Quake?

For you MUST own Duke Nukem 3D, because of the best easter egg of any game ever.

To unlock it you need a saved game of either of the other Lobotomy games (Quake, Exhumed) or destroy all toilets in the game.

Exhumed was a cracker also.

I really want Elevator Action Returns but its hard to find near mint/mint with spine :(

I took delivery of quite a few more games(15) last Friday, mostly CPS2 conversions, SNK games and a couple of shmups.

Souky seems pretty good but is nothing like what Raizing are capable of(Battle Garegga), it's quite a overhyped game, although I havent played it deeply yet so maybe my opinion will change. In The Hunt/Kaitei Daisensou is a real corker of a game though, it definitely doesnt get the respect it deserves :(

I whipped out my Saturn to play for the first time in ages and I can't believe how some of the games that I used to really love have aged very badly...
Shoot em up's on the Japanese Saturn really are amazing though.
Souky isn't as good as they say it is but it is good.
Battle Garegga really is a top class shoot em up.
I also played Batsugun again and I really have to say that it really is my favourite shooter on the Saturn. It's much more intense than Battle Garegga and the fire power potential you have in Batsugun is absolutely amazing.
Buy this game now!

I'm waiting for a complete EAR at roughly ?40 or under. I saw it go for $40 without spine within the last 2 months, also missed a buy it now at $52 mint with spine once :(

btw, am I the only one that thinks In the Hunt is stupidly hard, a 1cc on it is impossible imo, I continued well over 20 times on easy and with lives set to 5!!!

It's true what some of you guys say about the eBay minefield, certain games can quite literally double in price overnight and than crash a couple of weeks later, it pays to be level headed and wait. Even though I've only been collecting for 2 months or less, quite a few titles have gone up noticably in value. I saw RSG go for $120-140 without spine a few times, decided to hold off, now they seem to be topping $180 regardless of spine :(

A mate of mine got Strikers 1945 5/6 weeks ago for $22, one went yesterday for $51!

Now, now, kiddies, always remember that first port of call should be your parodius games!!!

And I don't think anyone's mentioned Game Tengoku, which is a brilliant shmup. Essential. And mental.

Batsugun IS brilliant, and under-rated. As is Metal Black.

But Radiant SIlvergun is as good as they say, and superior to Ikaruga, I think.

But, I repeat- get those Parodius fellas IN!

The Saturn also had a good range of table games too, has a great version of Shanghai (The Great wall by Sunsoft) as well as the usual Mahjong games (Suchie Pai, Super Real Mahjong, etc...).

It also has some great puzzle games too from Puyo Puyo Sun, Puzzle Bobble, Cleopatra Fortune to really weird ones involving Tokimeki Memorial characters. The Saturn has a decent range of games that go outside the normal shooters and action games... Think half my 170 odd Saturn games are non shooters or action games...

Has anyone played either of the following:

Willy Wombat - no idea what it is
Rabbit - some kind of wierd beat em up

I have both factory sealed, given to me as a present. And I havent been sure about wether to open them or not.

Anyway, how come no one has mentioned Princess Crown apart from me?
The game is quite literally beautiful. Very big sprites, surprisingly nice medievil setting (bright an anime esque though), great music and some very enjoyable 2D brawling combat that involves magic and nifty use of items. Multiple charatcers too, really good stuff.
It plays like a side scrolling RPG, except the battles are real time, and vagually street-fighter/final-fight esque.... sort of. Very interesting style.

2D sprite fans owe it to themselves to look for it, easy to complete in Japanese as well, which is a bonus.

Lan-Kwei told me the price is uber high in Japan at the moment, so they won't be stocking it/requesting it for me. OtakuMW can get hold of the box set version for ?86ish+P&P!!

Big Al

The game is not too bad, it's by no means the best in the series.

Worth picking up if you can get a good deal but unless you are a sad collector as well as game player (like myself unfortunately) then it's not worth that much.

Kubrick
03-04-2004, 06:50 PM
FF Revenge is absolute ****e! I also thought "it can't be that bad..." but it was even worse than I expected. Worst Capcom game ever :o
I think I paid about ?45 for a mint copy a couple of years ago.

Treble
04-04-2004, 12:58 AM
FF Revenge was made by Capcom USA, iirc, so no surprise it was ****e. Rare/hard to obtain does not necessarily = good.

Princess Crown: heard great things, but it generaly goes for a high price, and I think that the combination of a language barrier and the fact it isn't supposed to be a Guardian Heroes beater means UK owners aren't interested at the ?50-plus selling price. Cheaper, and you'd have a bigger market to preach to.

I remember playing Final Fight Revenge for the very first time in the arcade and finishing it on my first go with Guy. Considering first goes are usually blundering attempts while trying to figure out the buttons, it either confirmed it's ****eness or confirmed me as a gamesplaying uber god. Hmmm probably the former.

Well I recieved Final Fight Revenge today, it is a contender for worst fighter ever(that I've played at least) :(

I will keep it as my recent purchase of the "All About Capcom Fighting Games 1987-2000" book(very lush book btw) has convinced me to buy a version of every Capcom fighter

The good part is that it only cost $30 shipped, although I bought in a really roundabout way so it was more like $47(long story....)
