    Depends on exactly what you are defining a fighter as...

      Screens scrolls, your guy can punch people (or pick up various weapons to fight with)

      so things like, Kung Fu Master, Double Dragon, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Final fight and so on.

        Spartan X (you dare call it Kung Fu Master...) was probably the most well know.

        Technically you could also have Fighting Roller by Taito 1983...

        Although I think there are a few games even earlier then that...

            Yeah, but that was 1986, I'm looking for anything before (looks around to see if MD is here) Kung Fu Master.

              Oi, call it Spartan X by Irem or else.

              Jackie Chan in Project A, Pony Canyon, MSX I think was just out before Spartan X and had scrolling (if a pixel green tree outline counts as scrolling....).

              Still thats 2 games before Spartan X...

                Were they arcade titles though?

                  Why you limiting it to arcade titles? :/

                  Anway your thread wasn't very clear, you didn't specify arcade arcade titles.

                  Anyway Fighting Roller is probably the first scrolly beat 'em up as fulfills the beating up things and scrolling aspect.

                          I vaguely remember a side scroller before Kung Fu Master which was very similar but you had to fight a bull in one stage.

                          Of course Rastan Saga is the best game of this type, don't you forget it!

                            Your thinking of Data Easts Karate Champ which er isn't a side scrolling beat 'em up... It was however the first one on one beat em up.

                            Rastan Saga is more er a slash em up rather then a beat em up too.... ^_^;

                              Got to agree with MD on this, Rastan saga isn't a beat-em-up.

                              I'm basically thinking of anything where you initially start off with just your fists if a game gives you a weapon from the very off (tiger road, black tiger, rastan saga, magic sword (but dynasty warriors is) and so on) then it's not a beat-em-up (imo)
