What genres disappeared with the 16 bit consoles?

..And which would you like to see again?

For me I would like to see scrolling beat em ups again. There has been a few since SOR et al, but not many, and apart from Guardian Heroes they have all been poor.

    Any more?

Yes and no. It appears to be on one plane so there isnt much deviation from the action.

Another one that doesn't appear much is also 2D platform games. Apart from Mario 64 all other 3D platform games have left me cold.
They just cant compete with the early Mario and Sonic games.

I have to agree, 2D platformers have always been superior to their three dimensional counterparts in my oppinion. Oh how I longed to be playing Sonic 2 when I bought Sonic Adventure

2d platformers and scrolling beat em ups - how i miss them, also gone and missed a little are columns/tetris style games that are new (i.e not the next tetris 2131238 with new block), i loved columns, preferred it to tetris by a long way!

in truth does anyone feel that developers now seem to be stuck in the idea that if they release a 2D game that the gaming public will frown upon it and see it as graphically inferior to 3D titles

Namco's Klonoa games are essentially 2D platformers, and fantastic games! I think we need more 2.5D stuff. Klonoa 2 in particular is one of my fave game this generation.

I do miss Platformers, thought as rosey as we look back on the 16 bit days as, tbh most platform games back then were ****e, just like they are now.

                    YES.

I think publishers are the ones that would be worried about there success. I hope a game like Viewtiful Joe is successful just so people realise how financially viable 2D can be.

Graphic Adventures such as Monkey Island, Beneth a Steel Sky, Sam and Max, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango. I would like to see this genre make a big come back on next gen systems.

I don't think any genre has died- but many have taken a rest. 2D style games still get made( thank God ) and quite a few are great experiences. The days when tons of scrolling fighters got made and 2D platformers ruled the industry are long gone though- but at least we have hundreds of A-Grade retro examples!

I'm not sure if 2D will eve die out. I have read that quite a few young kids have been excited about games like Alien Hominid. Some of them even think the 2D platform style is new and fresh . Anyway this enthusiasm for 2D from kid gamers bodes well for the future of the style.
