I remember reading around 2000/2001 that there were certain vending machines in Japan that contained both Super Famicom Jrs and SFC games. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

You are thinking of the Nintendo Power machines probably.
It works something like this: First you buy a SFC cart named 'SF Memory Cassette', which contains 32Mbit flash memory and 256kbit SRAM for 3980 yen. Then you go to a shop with a NP machine, insert the cart, and choose the title(s) you want from the machine. If your cart is already full, you will need to delete some space. After you have downloaded the games, you go to the counter and pay for the titles, and receives the manual(s) for the respective game(s) within 3 minutes.

OK, here's what you can get from vending machines in the BIG cities.
Game software (mostly nintendo hand helds or Playstation)
Game hardware (only ever saw famicom clones)
magazines
cards (game related as well as anything else)
hot & cold food / drinks
normal and porn DVDs / videos / magazines
soiled knickers (sick !)
new socks, boxers, ties.
music CDs
and a whole lot more. Where I live we only really have CDs, DVDs, food & drink.
