    Film Noir

    Ok film buffs!

In the same vein as my Westerns thread, after watching Brick at the cinema i feel in the mood for a spot of classic Film Noir.

What (in your opinion) are the best exmaples of the genre I should check out this weekend?

    Double Indemnity
    The Postman Always Rings Twice
    Laura
    The Asphalt Jungle

All are brilliant, classic noirs - I've got loads of love for The Set-Up as well.

French noir is the best IMO:
      Le Samourai
      Le Cercle Rouge
      Bob Le Flambeur
      Riffiffi (sp?)

      In approximate order of coolness.

Too true. M by Lang is an interesting proto-noir.

The high lord of all English-language noir (excusing The Asphalt Jungle) is The Third Man - such a good film.

                  Third Man seconded...

for a slightly more contemporary affair though, give Cypher a bash.

Most of the big ones have been mentioned barring...

                    The Big Heat
                    Night of the Hunter

There are also post-noir films but I know some people don't class them as proper noir.

                    Chinatown
                    Bladerunner
                    Blue Velvet
                    Mulholland Drive
                    Glengarry Glen Ross
                    Angel Heart
                    LA Confidential
                    Sin City
                    Dark City

Criterion released Le Samurai pretty recently in the US.

There is no UK release, but there is a French R2.
