Retro games you are currently playing or have just finished!

Forum seems a little quite of late, so lets try to get a little bit of life back in it.

    Just finished:

    Wonderboy in Monster World (MD)
Massive fan of the Wonderboy series and after getting it as a Christmas present the Christmas before last I finally finished it last week. Not that hard or that long but a good solid platform/RPG, love the bright use of colour in it and the cute design of the characters. Final boss was quite tricky in a strange way, interesting ending as well.

Talmit?s Adventure (aka. Marvel Land) (MD)
My brother, brought this awhile back and hates it?s guts, admittedly it?s not the prettiest MD game out there. Ended up finishing this in three setting but an enjoyable platformer none the less, really liked the crazy roller coaster level and the whole theme pack feel. Boss battles our a bit different to normal the water balloon one is surprising good fine, the escape section at the end of the game was also a nice touch.

    Alien Soldier (MD)
Treasure?s MD swarm song and what a song, at first I never really like Alien Soldier back in the days when I used emulator to play games, I found it unforgiving hard and slightly bland. However my opinion changed awhile back when I managed to get a copy and play it.

Last week I sat down and decided to finish it, now that I?ve spend some time on Alien Soldier I realised it not that hard in fact it?s quite easy, It is a case of working out attack patterns and finding the right weapons, but once you get the hang of it, class game. The later stages in the game look fantastic and more like a SNES game, the elevator with the massive evil version of yourself and the horse riding cowboy (nod to sunset riders?) boss really stuck in my mind, the final bosses was also rather impressive if somewhat easy. (He also reminded me of the lion king boss from Sparkters on the SNES)

    Super Bomberman 5 (SNES)
Got to love the bomberman games, this one is a bit of a homage to the previous games featuring levels from all four of the previous SNES games. Has a huge number of levels to play through, I finished the game but only finished 25% of the game, one to save for when me and my brother can crack on with it together.

That?s all for now, but what games are you play and would you recommend it to other gamers?

ALien Soldier is a wonderful game - it looks beautiful, kind alike Kolibri does on the 32X.

I haven't played a video game in almost a year now - so when I do start back I want to finish Ecco Tides of Time (something I have never managed to do) again it is a wonderfully beautiful game. And when the Asterite is in pieces and the mental midi music plays - wow - you just get caught up in the moment.

      Bare Knuckle

Recently been playin this series on the MD a fair bit. Played through them all one day after another but i've continued to play Bare Knuckle 3 moreso than the others. I personally don't think the music is as bad as everyone says. Admittadly there are some real stinkers in there but it doesnt bother me too much. The swift speed of the game with the ability to run etc have kept me playin it over the others.

        Pirates of Dark Water (MD)

I have seen the SNES version but I have never played or seen the Mega Drive version. Turns out it is a completely different game, a platformer this time. Quite a good one too.

Shame on you Jamesy. Bare Knuckle 2 is by far the best of the 3

Been giving Link to the Past a bash on the VC. Super game but infuriating at times.

Now I WOULD LOVE to know what the story behind this game is. I watched the show as a kid and was furious when they cancelled it before you got all 13 treasures of rule. Do you get a chance to complete the story in the game? Is it different?

I agree with jamesy, I too think Bare Knuckle 3 is the best in the series, the speed and gameplay improvements just make it a better game. The same however I can't say for the English release of Street of Rage 3, far too much was changed and removed from the Japanese release.

                  Kolibri
Gary said about it, but guess which game I?ve have just finished. Beautiful, beautiful game and a reason you should own a 32X for. It's a good shooter with some very interesting concepts a couple of the level are a bit of a mixed bag however, to many are a bit to similar. There also a difficulty spike as well as you get a variety of very short to very longs levels and very easy to very hard. Certainly the thinking man's shooter and I?m surprised it never got ported to the Saturn. Well worth the ?15 I paid for it.

                  SuperAdventureIsland 2
Just finished this the other day as well, also been a bit of a fan of the series as well, but I do prefer it when it?s not stealing from Wonderboy. Very different to the first game on the SNES, and take a lot from Wonderboy in Monster Wold. But an enjoyable Platformer/RPG, the monster racing in the casino is good fun and has a surprising good sound track as well.

                  Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima
Currently playing this brilliant game on the SNES, that?s crying out for a DS port because of how the game works. It?s an adventure game done in the style of Zelda. Yes it?s Japanese, but there are walkthrough to it but you can work out most of the puzzles yourself. Oddly enough me and my brother were able to translate an solve a few puzzles as well, with the help of a Japanese dictionary. If you haven?t played it then I suggest you do so it?s a very special SNES game.

Just for the record when I?m not on retro at the minute I?m playing through Ninja Gaiden 2 on hard after finishing the game the first time round and Final Fantasy XII where I?m 250 hours into it and am still no where near the end of the story!
