"Fury over football on Easter Sunday"

The good old Archbishop of York sticking his oar in again. Why don't you talk to your congregation instead, oh yes, that's right....

Considering the majority of the country is no longer religious in any meaningful way (and the ones who are aren't Christian anyway) why should various things have to stand still due to religious traditions. This morning for instance I went for a walk into town (after 11 I might add, been caught out with that before) and apart from a couple of coffee shops everything was closed. I was well pissed off.

Do these things have any place in the modern UK?

Of course it's a double-edged sword, I don't advocate getting rid of the bank holidays or christmas breaks!

In fairness, we wouldn't have football matches on Christmas Day.

And there i was under the false assumption that "Church leaders" were getting paid for the time they spent giving sermons/leading services today. If they can get paid for working, especially in the current economic climate they have no right dictating what the rest of us do. If you're religious surely it's your choice not to work...i don't want my choice taken from me by a community i have no truck with.

No, football has no place in the modern UK.

The NHL has four games on today, all in the USA. They seem to be 'more religious' as a society in general, yet there doesn't appear to be any fuss.

Not that I advocate stripping away religious holidays for the corporate whore machine, you understand.

I think its nice to keep some kind of 'old ways' in place, be they religious or not.
I would welcome some kind of 'structure of old' where shops were closed on a Sunday/Bank Holiday/Xmas etc, & where everything stopped for at least a few days of the yr, whether it be out of respect of religion or not. Why cant we just STOP giving in to all this commercialism that gets thrown at us for at least a few days of the yr?

If u go to other countries they respect their traditions be they religious or not, while we here in the UK just seem to leave it behind, which is part of our culture & traditions as a nation.

Yeah, when banks started opening on bank holidays, that's when someone should have really said "this has got to stop!"

Noone is forcing you to participate in the commercialism just like noone is forcing me to go to church though. It's just convenient to be able to do these things whenever you need to. If someone's idea of a relaxing day is to go to the shops or the footie then they should be able to. Just as its your right to want to have a day of "rest".

Thing is, people have to man these shops and events. Yes they get paid, but for some it's not just about the money, it's about a day off!

It's just one of those things. I worked in a shop for a bit and HATED the bank holiday shift. I'd rather have not had the money, but I was always timetabled for then since I was the young, newbie exploitable irk.

I once worked for a bank in a call centre and had to work bank holidays! Worst job ever.
People should stop crying, one day in a blue moon when things are shut. Enjoy the quiet, drink beer and listen to music, thats what I do on these days.

It's what Jesus would have wanted me to do.

I've worked in a shop as well though and the people there don't work 24/7! They work full- or part-time hours just like everyone else. It just might happen to fall on a bank holiday which I'm sure they wouldn't like, I've done it before too. I think there is the demand out there for shopping and events on bank hols.

But xmas isnt about jesus etc anymore. Its a family time thats why it wont happen. Easter is still family orientated but not on the same scale as we all know. I work on everyday of the year but if they tried to make us work xmas id go mental.

Modern britain needs to adapt. I couldnt get sod all i needed today from the shops.

Isn't there another bank holiday tomorrow? As far as I'm aware all the shops are open.

As anyone who watched the Villa vs Everton match saw earlier, it looked like Villa were finished but then they rose from the dead. Can't get more Eastery than that.

                            :tumbleweed:

I don't mind the shops being closed every now and then, for whatever reason. I'm sure the ppl working in the shops appreciate the time off. By far the best thing about religion is the free days off work. Although I reckon that as we're a multicultural society, we should all get days off work for every single religious holiday there is. In the interests of peace and harmony
