Critics Club II: 01 - Tom Hanks

Four years on, we'll be giving our critical scrutiny another outing with...

    Critics Club II

As opposed to the original run which focused on the directorial efforts of fifty well known directors, this time we're looking at the life time work to date for the most well known and successful actors and actresses in Hollywood. In each thread:

Vote for the movie you feel is their best

Whilst also discussing their other work, your reasons for voting and thoughts on what is their weakest.

Some will have very long lists so some trimming will be required to focus on the key entries but broadly the main selection will be available each time.

Either Big or Forrest Gump. I think they define his career.

    EDIT: Or Apollo 13.

    EDIT II: Or Castaway.

... this might be harder than I thought.

Where's Tom's magnum opus, "Bachelor Party"?

Just joking Supes, you know I love your work.

It is tricky, though as Asura says.
Quite often he has the "Cruise Effect" where it's Tom in Space , Tom the pilot, Tom the soldier and so on.
Forrest Gump saw him out of his usual role and I love how endlessly positive the character is.
      So I went for that.

I've been meaning to rewatch Castaway for a while, though.

I probably like him in interviews as much as I like him in film. He seems sound.
I'd deffo have a pint with him.

Big is probably my favourite, if I'd have to pick one.

Also for how it has an 80s-tastic "under the radar" bit where the woman sleeps with him... A 13 year-old in a man's body. Doubt you'd get away with that now.

Apart from the obvious stuff, I thought he was great as Walt Disney in Saving Mr Banks. I heard an audio clip of the real Disney on a documentary and Hanks had his afflictions down to a tee.

He’s very funny in The Money Pit.

Why is the entire forum being turned into one giant telemarketing call?

The 'Burbs is a stone cold classic.

Hanks is just so damned likeable, though he's one of those actors who's mostly just playing himself in every film. Saving Mr Banks is a good and underrated one but for me the film of his that I hold the highest is Green Mile. Man, it's a long slow film but the payoff...

I used to like Splash! when I was younger, but that's mainly because I had a crush on Daryl Hannah.

Another vote for Big. Massive cliché coming but it's a part he was born to play.

I need to revisit Big as I don't think back on it that fondly.

S'alright, but I thought the character was a bit of an idiot and Hanks acted him younger than the age he was supposed to be.

Maybe kids today are a lot older than they were in the 80s.

It's one of the few films where I see him as the character. Most of the others I just see Tom Hanks.

Like the original Critics Club, I'm going to call time on these every other day or so, hence tomorrow we'll move on to the next star
