My mother rang yesterday to say that Aretha Franklin had passed away (I don't watch the news so had no idea). As a massive fan I've been rummaging through her albums and, man, she's still the best. The music she released on Atlantic Records in particular is timeless. I don't believe in mourning the dead but I do believe in celebrating their lives so let's enjoy the queen of soul:

    Still the queen.

Hadn't heard this in a while. Great tune. Very simple. Very clever.

One of the great songs. A poetic, sprawling masterpiece, full of vivid imagery and brimming with cultural references. So many pages have been written by music lovers and critics trying to gauge the depths of this song and interpret its meaning. Some of the lyrics are just mesmerising...

              Sunday mornin' at the diner
Hollywood trembles on the verge of tears
I watched the waitress for a thousand years
Saw a wheel inside a wheel, heard a call within a call
I dreamed a highway back to you

Look at that. It's just genius. Stream of consciousness songwriting at it's most evocative.

This one ain't so mysterious. Just a simple song about a working man and his mule trying to make it through life.

Beautiful rendition of the classic track. Great album too. If you're a Led Zep and a classical fan, check the album out.

Can't stop playing this album. It's so simple, honest and incredibly heartfelt. No pretense, no posturing, nothing superfluous. Gorgeous.
