Finished Elemental Master on the Megadrive yesterday.
For some reason I always thought this was a tough shooter and never managed to get very far when I played it, but I still always enjoyed it.

However when I put it on, on Monday I got to the 5th stage on my first go. It was the furthest I have ever gotten and thought it was the last level. I watched a YT video of a playthrough and found out there were actually 7 stages but also that you could charge your weapon.

Going back in with this new knowledge I managed (just) to get through the whole game. Was super chuffed as I always thought it would be a shooter I’d never finish.

Finished Crimson Skies - only consistent criticism would be that your allies did virtually nothing except tell you what the next task is or call for help. Their contribution to the combat was always minimal and their general stupidity, particularly in the escort missions (better than some) tiresome. I could also have done without the overlong flying in the temple corridors levels near the end but otherwise I really enjoyed it.

The game deserves its good reputation.

It was the last unplayed real flight combat game worth playing I have for that console generation (Xbox, PS2, GC).

Crimson Skies is one of those games I always hear about and have no experience with. Definitely something I need to change in the future.

I finished GTA 3 and had a lot of fun overall. There's too many missions later in the game that are more frustrating than fun though.

Yeah, once you get used to how it plays, it's not a very hard game. Well.. not by retro standards.

Thoroughly enjoyed GTA3 when I played it although IMHO Vice City and, the peerless for its time, San Andreas were each significant improvements on their predecessor. So if you liked GTA3 you still have those two to come.

Even now I'm almost envious of anyone who is doing the latter for the first time. It might not have the same effect on gamers now as it did then but whilst it is dated and crude in looks/animation by today's standards it was a benchmark for that generation and, arguably still the best GTA game yet made. There are still huge parts of the map I barely touched and I must have put in at least 500 hours over the many months I was playing it.

San Andreas was the first one I ever beat. For the first three games I'd always just mess about, discover secrets and see how long I could survive against the police. Vice City is a bit of a blindspot since I've never really played it so that's next on my list.

In the meantime I tried to play Formula 1 97 but for some inexplicable reason, you cannot redefine the controls for your control pad. You can for the keyboard but there's nothing for your controller which is strange since Formula 1 96 did let you do that. As it stands you have to press up on the dpad or analogue stick to accelerate and down to brake and it's just... yeah... no. I'm getting Amiga flashbacks using that control system. I did try Joy2Key but it had no effect in-game.

So that's gone on the backburner and I've jumped back into Baldur's Gate II. I would like to get past chapter 2 but you can't walk two steps without someone asking for help. I'm normally fine with ignoring quests in RPGs but I just can't do it here, I want to see and do everything. I should probably do it soon though, just so Jaheira can shut up complaining.

I actually think a lot of retro games are not as hard as people think.
90% of the games I’ve played and finished recently, I would say I’ve done them within about 8 hours.

I think people are just put off by the idea of “restarting”. It’s not really restarting though as you’re learning all the time so you’re getting better and better.

Thanks to other threads on here I’ve currently got the following on the go:

Super Metroid (via Switch) - always get stuck on this one and already running round the same bit over and over again quite early on in the game. Had a peek on YouTube to see where to go and notice I’ve already missed a few items. In spite of all this it is one amazing game so the backtracking doesn’t bother me, and in fact I like that the player’s hand isn’t held throughout.

Rondo (on the train to work via my GP2X Wiz) - what a game! The graphics, the music, the gameplay. Looks absolutely gawjuss on the Wiz’s dinky OLED screen although the crappy controls of the unit take away some of the experience. But hey ho, it fits in my pocket. Currently playing through the normal route, and when I’ve finished I plan to go through the alternate route. And when I’m done with that I’ve also got Symphony and IV on my Wiz to play through.

Devil Crash (via Wiz) - playing Rondo also inspired me to play another great PCE game. Fantastic for short bursts on the tube, although those bloody mini tables with the double set of flippers are bloody difficult! Only managing a meagre 3M on the board so far but give me time!

Yeah, it's all about learning the game through lots of repetition. I think that's quite an old school demand from designers, so people more comfortable with modern design might find retro games quite a chore. But there's actually a lot of satisfaction from learning and mastering games.

One of my go-to games on the PCE -- love the graphics, music, and overall vibe. Easily my favourite pinball game.

My favourite is either The Twilight Zone or the original Star Trek. As in the proper tables

That's one of my favourites alongside Bride of Pin-Bot. I have them for the PS4. Would probably buy Twilight Zone if I could have a real pinball table.

Been saying it for a while but get your arse down to Booreh and go Arcade Club. You can play Twilght Zone properly, none of this PS4 crap.

I'm currently playing Treasure Hunter G for the Super Nintendo. I have the SFC version but never got far before due to the language barrier. Playing through an English translation patch on my Super Everdrive again now, about 4hrs in.

I'm over the standard JRPG hump at the beginning, and things are starting to open up now and the hook is sinking in deep. I like the battle system, and there seems to be a lot more to it than I currently understand. The main thing that sticks out so far is the music, which is amazing. Going to keep prodding away at it some more this weekend, hopefully.

Just finished Chiki Chiki Boys on the Megadrive. It’s been on my to do list for a while.
Not a bad game, I find the balance a bit weird with bosses taking tonnes of hits to die.
It seems brutally hard at first with you only getting 2 lives and then it’s game over, however once you get used to it it’s actually not too bad. Levels are quite short and bosses aren’t too hard to figure out.
