Samsung, the company with the largest share of Blu Ray player sales in the market, have announced they are pulling out of the market in the US marking a major blow to the medium that also includes abandoning newer 4K format versions as well

UHD is doing better at this point in its life than Blu-Ray so will hopefully stick around for a while yet. Streaming services can’t compete with UHD for picture quality and the next generation of consoles will likely include UHD drives to cope with the larger asset sizes thus bringing many more UHD capable devices into homes.

A mentioned in that article, Sony is still making them, they have a much bigger stake in it as they sell movies, so having multiple resale opportinuties will always be on their agenda as Streaming services kill off the ability to rerealease things in the same way.

Hopefully UHD discs continue to be created as a high end option. If you go into a Fopp now (if you can find one, after most shut), they put the Blu-Rays from boutique labels like Arrow, 88, Signal, Eureka, etc front and centre these days. I think that's the future for 4K Blu-Ray, those more expensive specialist releases for people who care about film and are into AV.

The casual movie watching market has gone and is never coming back, but I hope UHD can continue to be viable by serving a smaller but more dedicated fanbase of viewers.

I don’t have enough info to know but I’m going to guess that the streaming services pay a pittance for most content in the same way that music streaming services pay a pittance. Overall better than making nothing from piracy but I still think that a large amount of media companies have a vested interest in selling us their media, whether physical or otherwise, rather than giving into the existing SVOD models. But it’s also why many are seeing the writing on the wall and trying to launch their own services but this doesn’t feel sustainable until they are bundled together.
