Didn't the first film get criticism for not showing enough Godzilla and destruction? Its a Godzilla film, I just want to see him fighting massive monsters, destroying buildings and atomic breath.

Yeah, I saw this last night and it's big, dumb fun.

You're either going to get hung up on the characters doing stupid things, or realise it's a movie about fighting monsters.
From the general review vibe, I was actually expecting more punchy-punchy, but there's loads more scenes with people than they're suggesting.

I think you're going to get more out of this by seeing it at the IMAX than you would streamed to your phone or if you watched it on a plane. There are some great shots of the monsters making their arrival.

Music was brilliant as it reused all the classic Godzilla themes and got some chills when you knew the Big G was on his way.

I think you know if you're going to like this already, really.

I'm so looking forward to seeing it. Could be about a week before I do but I'm all over this.

            Hopefully Monday or Tuesday.

Critics be damned. I’m not expecting Cannes-standard. It’s a Godzilla movie.

The missus really liked Godzilla. Loved Skull Island. She though this was utter s***

I enjoyed it more than her but it was the weakest one, on the flip side it's the most like a big budget traditional Godzilla movie, feels like a love letter to the non-US films but it's utter disaster porn and nothing more. There's some stunning stuff in there but I felt like the film didn't always know when to back off and I almost stopped paying attention because its so relentless. Very curious what they do with the next film now as this one dials things up so much there's little mileage left.

Saw this last night. It’s really poor. Not too bad initially but later on it becomes terrible. Great kaiju designs and CGI although it’s always dark or stormy when the big boys are in action. A real waste of some good actors especially Ziyi Zhang’s character who added nothing to film.

Can't argue with any of that, mate.

I still enjoyed it, but it didn't satisfy like it should have.

I was expecting a big punch-up by the end, but it didn't really happen that way.

The dark scenes are getting on my wick, though. This, Godzilla, Pacific Rim, they all stage the majority of fights at night.
I rewatched Godzilla 3D in preparation for this and had to turn the brightness up for the first time as it was perpetually gloomy.

How has Zhang Ziyi not aged? Crouching Tiger was nearly 20 years ago!

I'll definitely watch it again, but deffo keep your expectations in check if you're seeing it.

It’s apparently cheaper to do dark CGI scenes probably due to not having to render as many light sources and it hides flaws.

I didn't know Zhang Ziyi was in the film and thought she looked familiar. She really hasn’t aged much at all.

Enjoyed this immensley, what a rubbish script, terrible motives and exposition - total waste of a superb cast. Despite all that I was thrilled at the action scenes particularly on the ice, some wonderfull cinematography - even if it was all VFX. From a fan of the last one, a favorite of recent times - this went way off into Roland Emmerich land, but really enjoyed it.

I saw this today and loved it. Thought it was pretty incredible. The imagery was amazing, almost spiritual at times. Feels like it was made by someone who worships these monsters and really respects the history and everything that has gone before. It looked like paintings in many sequences, almost abstract and gorgeous. The score was fantastic. And I had no problem with the story at all. It managed to avoid the problems of the last film which in turn had tried to avoid the problems of many of the Japanese films - Godzilla films are hard. This did well.

Totally loved it. A fantastic Godzilla experience.

My only negatives were that the editing was often way too frantic, too many Skull Island mentions (haven’t seen it so found them distracting) and that end song over the credits was awful. Pretty much loved every single other thing about the movie.

                        SPOILER:

Godzilla sending out those Mothra energy waves brought tears to my eyes. And that ending was spectacular.

There can be no forgiveness after that.

I look forward to hearing your considered musings!

                              It's flawed, but fun.

I get the feeling Prinny has already expressed his opinion about the film with that one post.
