Yeah, I googled and can’t find a thing from Nintendo that promised, said, implied, hinted or otherwise that GBA games would come to the 3DS. I found a single article speculating it would happen amongst a shedload stating it wouldn’t. All Nintendo seems to have stated is that GB and GBC games would, so they were pretty clear. I think that we can agree that Nintendo not specifically saying they absolutely wouldn’t is a billion miles from “they promised”.
Anyway, Theatrhythm! It’s a superb game. I played through the first one to death, then got the sequel and did the same thing. Not sure how many hours I racked up but it’s a lot. Some years back, I went to a concert of Star Wars music that was set to clips from the films and I came out feeling that this is now the best way to enjoy Star Wars. Theatrhythm for me is like that with Final Fantasy. I have so much nostalgia for Final Fantasy and a lot of it is down to the music and playing this game is probably more enjoyable to me than the commitment of actually playing through a Final Fantasy game.
The look is charming, the tracks are superb and the gameplay is very simple but gets challenging. It’s a little like Ouendan but, in terms of patterns, is even simpler. But what keeps it going is that there are field sections (overworld) and battle sections and they’re a little different. And you build up your characters and collect cards and so there’s always a real sense of progression. There’s also a kind of mission mode and I can’t quite remember what that’s called but that’s pretty enjoyable too, although I found it got very hard very quickly and I started to struggle.
Overall, it’s basically a simple rhythm game set to Final Fantasy music with loads of fanservice in the look, locations and characters and plenty of reasons to play as you build up your characters and unlock stuff. A real gem of a game and one of my favourite 3DS experiences. It’s about the only game that really makes up for the lack of a 3DS Ouendan.
