I feel like a broken record but this is what decades of a lack of investment in education looks like.

What will also be a factor is his competition. In a way he lucked out facing such a polarising opponent in Hillary. Without that leg up will protest voters side with him after the last 4 years?

Court filing says Trump and Hope Hicks spoke to Michael Cohen repeatedly as Daniels in 2016 threatened to go public with story of affair

Another Storm(y) for Trump, the FBI has stated that Trump was directly involved in the illegal hush money paid to Stormy Daniels.

He probably really, really wants Sanders to run. I like Sanders but there are too many Americans who will simply never vote for him; he says the word "socialism" and they run a mile.

Politics on both sides of the pond have revealed you don't need a politician, you just need a loud-mouthed semi-celebrity and people lap up what they have to say.

The other lesson revealed I feel is: believe people for who they show you to be. Everything Trump is was apparent before he was elected. Everything Boris is is apparent now. You can say “not everyone who supports them is a whatever” but everyone who supports them has to be okay with all those things they are which, in many cases, is the same thing. There hasn’t been a single surprise with Trump other than that it hasn’t in any way put off his supporters and he seems to have got away with everything.

I really hate the way politics is a versus game, not a co-op one.

One party has an ace idea and no opposition ever goes "Wow! What a great idea! I don't agree with most of what you have said, but that is going to benefit so many people and our country as a whole, so we too will implement this."

Absolutely! In a way now, I see some importance in a meaningful opposition but even that opposition doesn’t seem to be about what is good for the countries. As you say, it’s just a versus game. It benefits the wrong people.

Part of me wonders if, in the era of social media, this is always bound to be the case, because we're going to divide along two lines - political figures who are "without sin" (aka are mostly a ticking time bomb until we find out they did something years ago) versus ones people know aren't good people, who are voted for by those who don't care.

People the likes of Boris and Trump are "teflon-coated", the idea that "nothing sticks to them", but I think we've progressed out of that era into a new one. Everything sticks to them, but it just doesn't matter to their voter base.

Yep, I think there is a huge disparity there which works in favour of one side only. There are some who aim for better but then will punish transgressions hard, effectively cannibalising their own side and their own allies. People expect better of certain people and, probably, even expect too much. Whereas their opposition have no such expectations and can be far, far worse and come out unscathed because not only are the standards of their supporters much lower but many actively like those transgressions. It’s like the “he just says what we’re all thinking” thing which reveals a huge amount about those who say it.

Yeah. Funnily enough a few years ago I had this discussion with one of my friends, who made the (since proven, I guess) suggestion that our generation is going to have problems with this, because we lived without social media up until early adulthood, then widespread use of the internet came about after.

Kids who are growing up today will, likely, have a complicated time. I'm super-glad these things didn't exist when I was 15; I was an idiot who was raised by good parents, but with school-teachers who said and taught things that you simply couldn't teach a class of kids today, and I was supposed to trust these people. Fortunately I developed myself further as I got older, before I had an opportunity to apply those teachings into things that harmed people, but I definitely said things back in the 90s that I am incredibly glad are not on YouTube, forever recorded.

I think two things are going to happen; young people will be more cautious (both good and bad), but also, eventually, we'll be in the "let he without sin cast the first stone" situation where most people have a black mark against them, and people chill the **** out.

Trump dose a really good "fake news these people are trying to bring me down with lies" patter, but also tweets crazy racist stuff, and out right lies that his supporters seem to lap up. it's not that hes Teflon coated and nothing sticks him but that his supporter know what he is but support him anyway.

if someone told you ten years ago that in 2019 we would have an openly racist and sexist America president that was overseeing concentration camps and building a giant wall to keep Imigrants out, all while battling scandals about: Russian collusion and vote rigging. Rape and pedophilia allegations due to his extremely close links to Sex traffickers and convicted pedophiles. Not to mention his Affairs with Sex workers, and Tax Fraud allegations. you'd think they where crazy.
