Take-Two Interactive, which owns video game publishers Rockstar Games and 2K, on Monday reported gross profits of $299 million in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2020, while GAAP net revenue grew to $540 million, a 39 percent increase year-over-year.

The online components of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II have led to Take Two posting a $299m profit.

This is why we can't have nice things.

It's quartely profits too. And with their next freemium sports title being released and new Borderlands, Take Two will likely have a bumper year.

While we're talking about them - news broke last week that Rockstar North hasn't paid any corporation tax in the UK for the past 10 years

The horrible truth is nearly all of the biggest western Pubs aren't. Lots of offshore Caymen Island accounts.

The thing that's more galling is the fact they're claiming tax relief on tax they're not paying, so you as a tax payer are giving Rockstar money, even if you can't stand their games.

It might be legally sound, but it's morally bankrupt and yet again a demonstration that all the money is still not enough for these publishers.

This came up in another thread, I can't remember which - but always remember that corporations are legally required to do anything and everything that increases their revenue. If they don't do everything within their legal power for the benefit of their shareholders, if they go under or post poor numbers at some point, they can be held legally responsible for that failure. This system doesn't value ethics; just revenue.

It is ethically wrong, but it's what our financial system has asked them to do.

That would be a myth, probably perpetuated by companies where all the money isn't enough.

I had a conversation at a party on Saturday with a person of my occasional acquaintance, who admits to being a reader of this blog.  He repeated to me the often asserted claim that companies have a legal duty to maximise their profits, believing it to be true, and despairing of the prospects of reform for...

Companies often say that they have a legal duty to maximise profit and minimise tax. Sometimes this is called their fiduciary duty. But is this true?

I was originally going to defend Rockstar, separating Rockstar North in Scotland and the US company, but that's pretty poor show to dodge paying tax and claiming tax breaks.

I don't remember seeing Wreckfest before. Looks bonkers!

Here's something a lot of us can relate to:
"Control" Isn’t Going to Take Long to Beat and I Couldn’t Be Happier About It

"If some of these 30-hour games were a brisk 10-15 hour experience like say Uncharted 4 was, and Control will be, I might be more motivated to put aside whatever long-ass game I’m playing at the time for a weekend and bang out something new and interesting."

100% on the money, it feels like so much of a chore when a game weighs in at 20+ hours (when it's a genuine claim anyway as they lie a lot about length times). The vast majority of the time it's a game with too much padding or out staying it's welcome.

Yep, totally happier with a shorter experience. I just played through Resi 2 remake and I loved how concise it was. A real blast. I’m so sick of tickbox, to do list based games, and have been for some years. I have enough of that in my real life!

Obviously if it’s a genuine mega banger, Persona 4 or Witcher 3 or what have you, I love a longer runtime, but so few games actually justify their runtime.
