After 100 attempts (about 5 of which failed on my credit card details) I finally managed to get my order through.

If it arrives within 5 days I may give Sony a consolation point

each time you get the 'system is down message' if you refresh a couple of times you'll get to the next part of the order process. not a good idea to do this for the credit card section though, obviously.

        There is an order/support line: 08708 500 555

but after being on hold twice for 20 then 15 minutes its not looking too good.

any idea why on earth the shop is so busy at the moment? surely it can't all be the network sign up. i noticed the white ps2 sold out yesterday, maybe peoply trying to order the limited edition ps2 color editions are hammering the online shop.

i notice that under the 'privacy and security' help page:

Areas of the site where we have asked you to send credit/debit card details are made secure using [VeriSign Secure Server ID]. A secure site will always begin https.
which is bull. I especially like the 'insert verisign server id here' text left as is.

I have a feeling that they've deliberately disabled secure http just to speed the web server up because of how busy it is, especially as secure http connections redirect you to unsecure http connections.

        shoddy, shoddy, shoddy.

I've just got through on the phone line after waiting another 15 mins. I couldn't order over the phone either, but they didn't tell me that until I queried why they didn't ask for my credit card details. Apparently they use the online shop to place orders themselves, and didn't understand what https was.

On the order screen where you enter your credit card details, i kept getting the error message "we have been unable to process your card details". So i have been retrying and retrying, eventually it started to process them, but then the web page timed out and now i can't even get on the site to confirm my order as it's shut down for maintenance I'm now having to ring my bank to see if the transaction has indeed gone through...

That may have been my fault, sort of

When I phoned earlier I complained about the credit card transactions being unsecured, and I was told that no, they were secure. I tried to explain what https was, then they went off and checked it out with the techies. Surely the online shop support staff should know this stuff?

I got a phone call back from the help line 30 minutes ago saying 'gosh! you're right, https has been disabled!' and that they're shutting the online shop down for a couple of hours in order to fix it. Apparently the site is taking a hammering because all 3000 network trial emails went out at the same time yesterday. The word 'brewery' and phrase 'piss up' spring to mind.

I've been told disabling https was 'unintentional'. A cynic might think it was done to speed the web server up because of the heavy load, but there is no real evidence to suggest that. Lets hope they know how to fix it.

Just ordered mine too, encryption in place

The shop server is a bit nippier today, it had slowed to a crawl yesterday. Theres probably a memory leak in the shop code...

Will anybody be using the service with a chipped machine? or has anybody heard any stories or problems that might arise from doing so?

I've got a Messiah 2 but should be able to disable the chip...

I don't think modchips are such a big concern for PS2 online stuff because it isn't tied up to a single online account and a credit card (I think) like XBox Live is.

Also, there aren't any PS2 modchip protected games, which suggests that Sony haven't figured out how to detect them yet.
