Locked out of gmail - happened to anyone else?

I went to check my email and was presented with the log-in screen but the account address was locked to mine, with only the option to put the password in.

When I tried to do that, it took me to a screen (all in Japanese) telling me that I had done something against the rules, and my account had been locked?? What the hell could I have done?

Anyway to unlock it I had to select my country of residence, which then gave me a choice of mobile phone providers - I had to choose mine and put in my phone number. Five seconds later I got a call from a robot that read out a code number (again in Japanese). Entered that on the website and got back into my email.

Very strange indeed. Does this mean my account has potentially been hacked?

I read few days ago that Google will lock accounts when the accessing IP is different from the usual one within a certain time frame. For example, you normally log in with a Japanese IP and 30 minutes after an American IP tries to.
I would ask Google for more details on the matter.
