    PS2 Online order form

... was emailed to me just now.

You have one week from when you received this email to purchase your Network Gaming Trial Pack. After this time, we will assume that you no longer wish to take part in the trial, and will give your slot to another UK user that has signed-up.

If no longer wish to be part of the trial, no problem, just let us know by emailing the following address as soon as possible so someone else can have your place.

    ...

As one of our beta trial members you're also entitled to preview code before everyone else gets a look-in! So, for example, you could be showing off your superior combat skills in Hardware: Online Arena, or obliterating the opposition in Twisted Metal: Black Online ages before your mates!

This game code will be sent to the address you signed up with for the beta trial, so if it's different now, please email Customer Services at the address below to confirm your new details.
what on earth is Hardware: Online Arena?

Its a vehicle combat game from the people who did Dropship I think.

edit: apparently it uses a modified version of the Dropship game engine as well.

Bah, it looks like the online order form has collapsed under the demand.

I think they've disabled the purchase mechanism now.

I had probs too, maybe I'll try later.

I might not though and let someon else have the opportunity. I didn't know I would also have to spend money and limited brain power on hub/router/ ethernet cards or whatever.

Are there any cheap, really easy to set up solutions?

i cant get on it either so it must be down.

i'm connecting it up via ics in windows, it is cheap than an router as u just need a nic card in pc and use ethernet cross-over cable between ps2 -pc

Ah, cool, I've just noticed how cheap nic cards are. Thats sorted then - is nic just another term for network card.

Also could someone tell me drawbacks of doing it like that rather than a hub or a router. Is it a case of your 'pooter having to be on or not being able to be online on the PC AND PS2 at the same time or what?

As you can see, I'm not clued up about networks!

I managed to get to the page, but haven't bought the kit yet. I need to get a hold of my Dad's credit card, and see if he'll lend me the 40 quid.

Hardware: Online Arena is pretty good. I tried it out at the PlayStation Experience back in August. It's very addictive.

Oh, I can hook the Network Adaptor straight up to my cable modem through the ethernet port its got on the back right?

Well, the shop is back up and running now, but...

                Warning!

The payment form passes your credit card details in clear text (over http, not https with the little padlock).

This on top of running site off ASP on MS web servers all seems a bit crappy to me. I'm going to have to phone up and see if there is another way to pay.

The web server does accept encrypted connections over https, but then redirects you to the unencrypted http site.

Well done Sony. This doesn't bode well for online gaming security now does it?

Yup - if you've got an ethernet port you'll be fine, from what I can understand.

Excellent. So I won't have to buy any extra kit that I can't afford.

                      Hmm that's a bit worrying....

Let me know how you get on with calling, I think I will try and order another way too..

                        pft Sony pish!

Can't even get on the shop to order the damn thing!

Been speaking to an American gamer on Xbox live tonight who has his PS2 online and he basically said the only game worth having is SOCOM all the others suck in comparison to LIVE. Now that's only one view from one guy, does anybody else have any views and comments on the PS2 online experience? He also said theres alot of disconnecting going on because your playing with 56kers as well as broadband users :/

I heard 56kers are slowing it down but socom is broadband only. Infact I think the whole broadband trial thing in the uk is broadband only. Although Im sure some people will have ordered it without being on broadband.

The ordering form is totally borked for me. Not what I expect from a company with such a high profile as Sony, and if it's correct about not having a secure server for ordering, (i cant get that far) then that's total pish

Still, I'll keep trying and hopefully get it sorted by the end of the night.

Has anyone been able to order this ?

I could get all the way to Sony Shop registration page from work earlier, but then it started failing. Now I cant even get to the link from the email !!

                              1 - 0 Microsoft so far

Maybe Sony have made their server act dodgy on purpose so they can say "they were overwhelmed with demand ! " to be honest though everyone I know has a PS2.
