which is the best king of fighters to get?

Now I've got a sorted supergun, I'm getting an MVS motherboard with Metal Slug but which is considered the best "King of fighters"? I had '94 years ago on Neo Geo CD and loved it and lost (well sold) it, then earlier this year bought 95 and 96 for my saturn which rekindled the interest and brought on the AES and Supergun purchase. I think my question realy is do the later versions of KOF get over complicated and combo-tastic?

Have I gone wrong because after getting 95 and 96 on saturn, 96 seemed like hard work whilst 95 made me buy an AES and 94, so maybe I should just buy 94 for MVS and get far better RGB? arrrgh! but do they go like the street fighter series did and go combo loco?
