It has a link cable port built into it so you can use it to play stuff like Pokemon properly.

Presumably it'll work with a PAL console, but would you need a widened slot?

I doubt it would work on a PAL console (could be wrong) as it'll be NTSC-J. As for a widened slot, the British and Japanese cartridges are the same size..
