Can anyone settle a Starfox 64 high score?

Seeing as a number of people are whipping my scores and petty achievements on Ikaruga and Viewtiful Joe etc; there's only one game I felt really good at and that's at getting a points score of 276 on the first level of Japanese Starfox N64.

At the time I could only compare 276 with N64 mag and I seemed to be doing better than them. Now in the 'age of the internet' I really wouldn't mind seeing how people really scored. I remember discovering hitting bonus points from some wild shots like hitting the crab-like creatures skating across the sea and hitting the sea as well racking up bonus points.

Anyway I thought I was good!! Settle this pleeeeease!!!

Yeah the Pal version is totally different, I've been told it's slower so obviouslly easier
I started a thread a while back for overall completion scores (so far I had 1324 havn't been playing it recently but will do soon), gonna have to check for the stage 1 score though, think it was pretty close to yours. I wonder if anyone's got over 2000 on the NTSC versions
It's again one of those classic games you come back to now and again to better your scores.
Edit: hang on 276 on the first level , I thought 176 that is dam good!!!!! You got real skills

Right. I'm gonna get the game out and see if I can get anywhere close over the next few days. I better not be jerking people around with an extra 100 points - that'd be very bad of me.

Jap - not the PAL version - there's too much slowdown on PAL.

          Mercifully, I'm right - score is 276.

I can do 231 and both me and the pads are rusty.

Actually "Lylat Wars" is totally optimised.

First off I'd have to disagree that Lylat Wars is totally optimised on PAL.

I closely followed the game releases at the time through shocking debacles like Waverace and was very saddened when friends were having to put up with long waits and poor bordered PAL releases because of the machines they owned. From what I read and heard at the time Starfox's slowdown is between 10 to 20%. You can dispute this but I'd appreciate a source. Few Nintendo games from this period were optimised for Europe.

                  Scoring:
By taking out multiple objects in one powered up hit locking on you can rack up the 'plus points'. The first level of this is locking on and hitting a single wave on the central craft and taking as many others out with the same hit. The harder level of this is avoiding locking on but still using the powered shot. You can rack 'mysterious' plus points this way. When the crab creatures slide across the water if you do a powered shot hitting the crab and the sea you get an additional plus point as the computer is duped into believing you've hit something else. You can do this with the big robots that knock down structures or throw beams as well, earning +5 and +1. It all helps.
Obviously you've also got to know the best route through the level. The first level is steeped in secret trigger areas where you can fly through a gap, under a platform or between two towers and pull an additional wave of aliens to shoot at. Wherever possible you should avoid anything but a group kill that'll rack up the plus points.

I'll try and post a better guide to it after the weekend should anyone be interested. I put it on for the first time in a couple of years the other night and it's still an awesome game. The music reminded me of Ocarina.

Cheers for them tips, I didn't know about the 'mysterious plus points' obviouslly it must work for other stages as well

It works for other stages as well.

You can also get 'mysterious plus points' by hitting certain enemies with the powered up fire but just not locking on. Right at the very start of level one when Slippy gets chased (evil how you can't kill the hunter straight away) shoot it soon as possible then single ships cross the screen from left to right then right to left and on till they give you a bomb. Hitting each of these with a powered shot (don't lock!) will give you +1 - you just have to remember where each is going to appear then 'use the force' - it's like shooting blind anticipating each's appearance. That way you can rack up a silly score before you get to the first cavern.

One things though that's a bit of a flaw is that plus points happening outside the screen's borders often don't register with the computer so you have to be careful you hardwork doesn't go unrecognised, especially when it gets hectic.

Sorry for going on, I think it's my one specialised subject

Can get 18 shots on the initial approach to Corneria that way.
When a ship flies in try hitting the water blow it with the power blast . The "mystery" points are multiplied if you hit groups this way. If you can't manage shooing blind try to hit the CENTER ship if they're flying in formation using a lock on. I think I got 270 something on Corneria as well. On my US Copy.

I thought every nintendo mag made a big deal over Lylat Wars because it was the first Pal game to not have borders and to be full speed. I may be wrong.
