awaited is definitely jeff minter's new project "unity", which from teh edge interview just seemed corking
never enjoyed the tomb raider series and the only rare game i own is starfox adventures, which is pretty, but not belonging on any "best" list really. If timesplitter's 2 is uk made, then i'd plum for it as my contemporary choice, but I'm sure some folks come up with much more worthy choices...
Pretty telling that 90% of our favourites date back from 1980-90. UK developers have been mostly crap for over a decade. What an embaressment. The death of the home computer (C64/ST/Amiga) is mainly to blame IMO, back then gameplay was the focus and the difficulty rock hard! They trained up games players mainly because the games were so unfair. Now it's all licenses, sports, generic racing games and interviews with Jez San/Molyneux in Edge.
Donkey Kong Country or Timesplitters 2 I think, but I don't see why it should matter where the game was made (although I know that wasn't the point of the post).
Conkers bad fur day, Goldeneye and dizzy are my three favourites. To be honest the output from American developers aint that hot. Most quality games come from Japan. Sure there are exceptional USA made games but I think Japan is far ahead of everyone else.
SWOS, Project X, Alien Breed series (even if half the team were Swedish (i think) ), anything 16-bit by the Bitmap Bros, Worms (the first one as opposed to the EA-like 'franchising' of the game ), Project Gotham, Champ Man series which is eating my time despite having just got Orta and Steel Battalion
