Those skills will definitely come in handy, and he certainly hasn't wasted his time on a pointless endeavour. Anyone saying that is crazy!

BTW how come he managed to cut thru a metal pipe but his sword didnt get lodged in the softer block of wood below it?

Because he has amazing control over his sword, he probably struck just hard enough to cut the pipe but didn't follow through so the sword got embedded, although he does make a tiny chop in the wood. A bit like on films where you see someone swinging a sword at someones neck & then they have the power to stop it literally just before it cuts their head off where momentum would have certainly kept the sword going.

Either way still an incredible skill.
