  • Games Britannia REPLAYED - Sheffield's E3: Public days are 7th and 8th July

Games Britannia is a week long videogames education and careers festival, taking place from 2 to 8 July at the MAGNA Science Adventure Centre, Sheffield, and will celebrate the strength of the UK industry and inspire the next generation of British videogame talent. The festival concludes with the Games Britannia: REPLAYED public weekend on 7th and 8th July.

Dr Jake Habgood, senior lecturer on Sheffield Hallam's game development courses, said: "We want to engage children with the exciting opportunities that the videogame industry offers. Making games is a fantastic way to challenge and inspire students to study programming, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics - as well as art, English and music - by applying them all creatively to a finished product.

In the lead up to the event, teams of school children from across the region will compete to write, illustrate and compose ideas for a new video game based on one of the games industry's most iconic characters - Monty Mole. Ian Stewart, founder of the Sheffield-based game developer Gremlin Graphics who created the character, said "It's fantastic to see an initiative to rekindle the passion for programming at a young age. Many of my first employees learnt to program videogames on the computers they were first exposed to at school, and those skills helped to build the multi-billion dollar games industry we have today."

The action packed weekend celebrating 40 years of the British gaming industry looks set to be a great way to sample new and old games alike.

Namco will be displaying a host of their latest titles including Inversion, Tales of Graces F, Madagascar 3, Ni No Kuni and Witcher 2.

Nintendo have also confirmed they will be bringing their Nintendo Unleashed Tour to the event, which will have the latest 3DS and Nintendo Wii games including New Super Mario Bros 2, Beat the Beat Rhythm Paradise, Kingdom Hearts 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Minecraft is the videogame sensation that has revolutionised indie game development and has changed the way we look at publishing new software. Come along and play Minecraft, as well as meeting the team behind the hugely popular and entertaining Minecraft EDU.

  • Radiohead KID A MNESIA Exhibition - Report
    by Adrian Purser
Appearing recently on digital storefronts, this digital exhibition coincides with the 20th anniversary re-release and bringing together of Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac albums. It's been made in collaboration between the band and Epic Games, though it's also very quick to tell you that it is not a game, epic or otherwise. That, I think, is a mixture of nervous expectation-setting, alongside its creators selling both games, and what they've created, short.
Unless you're one of those sorts...

  • Datel Freeloader Review - Action Replay Gamecube Region Free disc
    by Charles R
Once upon a time, there was a Freeloader. It was late, as usual, but everyone waited with baited breath, because it promised much.

And so it came to pass, the Freeloader finally arrived, and oh what gifts it brought. The ability to de-zone everyone's Gamecubes. Finally, an easy (and cheap) way for anyone in the world to play games from anywhere else in the world. It was welcomed with open arms.
Datel, after many delays, have now released their de-zoning disc. Twice. The f...

Describing the greatness of Goldeneye isn't the easiest task in the world. If you were to show it to a gamer who has recently been showered with PC First Person Shooters such as Far Cry, then they'd scoff at the low-polygon landscapes, the poor digitised textures of Robbie Coltrane and the frame rate equivalent to the IQ of a table leg. They'd be missing the point though, as levels such as "Surface" are the forebears to Far Cry's grand vistas.
Which leads us nicely into one of the reaso...

  • TGS 2003 - Tokyo Game Show Report
    by Archives
As a first visit to any kind of games show, it was going to be very interesting to see what all the fuss was about. I remember reading about the Tokyo Game Show among other shows in magazines years back and having a sense of delight and amazement. Did you ever dream of going to a game show in Japan? I'm sure it's something most avid gamers can associate with. On Sunday the 28th of September, my wife and I headed towards Makuhari messe from western Tokyo, a journey of 2 hours. When we finally ...
