I disagree, the game could be quite happily remade without losing the charm of the original. For one, the music would be remixed sure, but certainly not to the 'rockier' advent children levels - when you hear a competent orchestra playing aerith's theme, it straight away evokes fond memories of her impaling, followed up by that scene that only those with hearts made of stone could not fail to shed a tear at, even if they disliked the character as I did.

The background art style would remain, instead receiving a clean-up and a sharpening, maybe even a redrawing - as with the character models and FMV sections. Voice work would be a given as well, with the option of it being toggled of course for purists.

Treating this as a fully 3D FF title like XIII would be a mistake though, that much is a given.

Yeah, it could be done well, I just don't think it would be were they to try. If they made it the way you describe it just wouldn't be the remake that people wanted. People want it to look like Advent Children, fully in 3D, etc, and if S-E aren't going to give them what they want, they probably won't see the point.

I think it'd work well if the character art was like a darker Wind Waker, but that'll never happen!

I think you underestimate the general public - they aren't stupid. You make a 7 remake look like 13 and you take away its soul and character. Redraw the backgrounds and character models, add voice work and orchestral music and you're onto a winner.

Some of the best remakes had very few changes made to them, but those changes carried impact. Take the recent re-releases of the Monkey Island games, the game was completely redrawn, remixed musically and fully voiced, yet at the same time it kept what made it special the first time around. Ocarina of time is another good example, that one had even less work done to it and had the 3DS been better received it would have been like the second coming!

Current Square-Enix would just **** it up beyond recognition. No thank you.

What daragon said pretty much. Redone backgrounds, characters and music but keep the rest pretty much the same. Perhaps make voices optional too.
Personally I don't want a 3D remake, just a polished version of the original.

No games need to be remade.

Biohazard remake was possibly the best example of how to remake game, however, like Guts I just don't think Square-enix could do it. I agree with the writer too, for me (beyond the translation ) the game is perfect, and tbh my image of Cloud was destroyed with the gay Arashi type, Japanese boy band member that he became in Advent Children, so him being remade like that for the PS3 is a no-no. Even redoing the script "This guy are sick", would take away some of the humour of the original. Although at least we might understand some of the dialgue this time "I see that'll how you'll fool them" or words vital to the story like, "clones" might be properly translated as "copies."

Also, is it too late to start translating people's names correctly too?
