Fractal review [Playbook/ipad rhythm puzzle game]

I have discovered a fantastic rhythm puzzle game for the PC, Playbook and IPad called Fractal that has had me hooked all day.

From booting the game up you just know it is going to be quality, with fantastic piano/classical music used to introduce you to the main menu screen.

The idea of the game is to push hexagons into the grid (which is a giant hexagon) causing a cluster of 7 of the same colour to link and these are then removed. As you progress and make chains and combos how well you are doing is reflected in the music. Slower more classical sounds play as you start with this getting more uptempo and basey as you get closer to the target and make chains and combos.

The game has a very simple but functional layout. You have 3 game modes available

    Campagn
    Arcade
    Puzzle

Campagn you have a set number of pushes to remove a set amount of hexagons. The game starts off quite easy but by level 5 you find yourself thinking carefully about where each hexagon is pushed in and what impact that will have on the board. This mode requires you to think a lot before placement as the hexagons are limited and you are given a very challenging number to eliminate. Also from level 5 you have to contend with 2 colours, only hexagons of the same colour can be eliminated.

Arcade is a fast paced version of the above mode. You have unlimited pushes but limited time (10 seconds to start with) however you also have time incons in your grid, if you make a cluster with one of these in you get bonus time added to your clock.

Puzzle mode has you with a limited number of pushes and a smaller grid. The idea is to clear the grid with the number of pushes given. This can be extremely hard as if you make 1 mistake you are unlikely to be able to finish.

This is an absolute gem of a game, anybody who likes puzzle games should be hooked, i suggest taking a look at the website for some gameplay videos.

The game is ?3 on the Playbook and worth every penny
