    Hatred review

Tried this out today but this is still very early impressions as it was merely a couple of try outs of the first level.

Hatred is a very straight forward game in which you play a black clad man who is filled with hatred for society. There doesn't seem to be any real narrative as such, just the simple premise that you character has decided that he is going to release his hatred for all by killing as many people as he can before he himself is killed. Loaded up with grenades and weapons he heads out of his home and the game begins as people see him brandishing a weapon.

It screams of being a game from the early to mid 90's and it doesn't at all try to be tongue in cheek about the fact. Everything is in black and white except for key lighting effects such as explosions and police sirens which does give it a nice look, it's smooth running and can look alright but it doesn't seem to try and be anything more than a killathon.

By controller you use the left analogue to move and the right to aim. the L trigger extends your viewing field for aiming whilst the R trigger fires your weapon. X reloads whilst B is crouch. Front R bumper throws a grenade and Y is used for executions.

In the game, executions are important. Your health dives quickly (it's easy to die even on Easy) and the only way to get health back is to perform executions on those you've damaged enough to floor, however too many hits will kill them and miss the chance. Hit Y over them and you get a brief fancy shot and a small return of hp.

The first level basically has you mowing down pedestrians until the cops arrive. You move around town, either by foot or by car, flooring everyone until you've killed enough that your aimed towards the local police department and tasked with the awkward task of wiping out the whole PD.

The main thing that's a hurdle in this so far seems to be the controls. I'm going to play about with the sensitivity but the character is very heavy footed and slow, especially in terms of mounting hurdles and fine aiming. It seems like it could end up being a solid old school shooter for a few hours but nothing up front to suggest this is nothing more than a straight forward title looking to nab attention with its massacre content.
