Master of Magic - PC (Remake of the 90s game).

Bit disappointing this one. Master of Magic is a 4X game that was popular in the 90s, but 4X has massively moved on since then.

MoM remake hasn't, and that's mostly the issue. As you will no doubt know, 4X means Explore, Expand, Exploit, and Exterminate. The only thing that you'll be doing a lot of is exploring and being exterminated. The base building is woeful, as is management of it. There are minimal buildings to unlock, there's no building research tree or tech trees to speak of, and the emphasis here is on the learning spells.

The idea of the game is to learn the master spell and become the master of magic, this is the main schtick. There are a lot of spells, over five different schools of magic (chaos, death, life, sorcery, and arcane), fourteen different wizards (no, you can't customise them), and fourteen different races with minions to build and control.

There are unique hero characters to recruit as things progress too, but then they'll die in battles. Ah, battles. I was looking forward to these and they are bad. The AI will kill your units in two turns with ranged spells you can't counter, even low-level creatures. Unfortunately, most of the creatures encountered on the map are not low-level, even at the start near your base. Click on a battle and the options are retreat, auto-battle, and command yourself. It'll show the chance of winning. A 100% chance of defeat is what you will see. All the time.

When you do get to battle, you can use spells, but on the wrong map and with the wrong spells, you'll not get to use them as they'll be barriers. You won't know that until you enter the map.

It is a very good recreation of the original game, but as mentioned, things have moved on in the 4X space since then, and this feels like a game from the 90s because it mostly still is. If that's what you're looking for, then this might be for you, but there are definitely way better 4X games out there.
