I took mine back to Currys, who exchanged it after a grumble, so I canceled the Microsoft exchange. My new console has a manufacture date of end of Jan and is soooo much quieter, I noticed a few tweaks on the Dashboard (probably from updates I had checked out before, and have it had on all day downloading and it is stable. So far. I even chose to download the new update that bricked my XBox originally. Glad really, as the noise difference is a major. Its so quiet now.

After hearing of a few of you guys downloading the new update and having your 360's suicide itself/ game save anomalys - i was really hesitant about going online with it :|

I did in the end, and after muchos crossing of fingers it's turned out fine. Plus my Ridge Racer 6 game save loaded up first time *phew*

You seriously expect decent DVD playback from a console?

            Either way, no.

A machine as powerful as the 360, with it's top-end graphics card and amazing cpu, I expect it to be the best dvd-player ever!

Sadly it's not, so I use my old XB1, which is really good!

On the subject of noise etc I've noticed recently that mine is a LOT quieter than it was when I got it - wondering if the drive has now "bedded in" or something !!

Either way, there's a marked difference in noise between when I got it (launch) and now.

I've noticed the exact same thing. Back in January, the noise of the disc spinning when I played DOA4 was similar to a small hoover Not really much noise at all now, whatever game I'm playing.

I only realised it was gone when I read this thread and thought "Damn, wish I'd waited until January to get one now!". But then I played it and realised that most of the noise had gone away by itself!

The biggest dif with my new machine is the fact the the disk does not spin continually, it starts and stops as needed. The old one would just spin up and stay spinning from the moment a disk was inserted.

I haven't been on live since this update was released, but will be online later. Any advice on whether to download this upgrade, or not?

You have to download it, theres no choice for it.

i dont think its too much to ask to be able to play dvds back without bad synching and jutters

Don't think there's much that can be done about that. It's because the PAL movie (which runs at 25fps 50Hz) is being forced to run at 60Hz.

The same will happen with any commercial DVD player when forcing a PAL DVD into 60Hz, even the likes of Oppo and Denon.

I assumed they didn't work full stop actually - 50Hz XBox1 games don't work over VGA (Halo).

I researched this issue. One guy who know's someone at MS said most of the launch games didn't use a utility that enables the game to control the speed of the drive, so the drive is basically running at full speed all the time ( which causes all the noise )

He said newer games don't suffer from this because the developer had access to this new utility which enables them to have full control over the drive speed.

I think this is true because PGR3 is very very noisy, as are the other launch games I have, but I recently bought RR6 and the machine runs quiet, like it does with XB1 games.

I was really worried it was my machine, but I'm relieved to know it was the games all along!

My COD2 ran the drive constantly with my first machine, but varries it on my new machine, so I personally think it must be hardware bios/driver related rather than software.

                                Just my experience though !
