Announced few days ago, DCS World is a new simulation environemnt by Eagle Dynamics, a firm well known by flight enthusiasts.
Essentially, everything made by Eagle Dynamics (from Ka-50 to A-10C and including the upcoming P-51 and Combined Arms) and certified third parties, is a plug-in to this enviroment which manages AI, dynamic campaigns, mission editor, rendering, audio and multiplayer.
DCS World is a free upgrade for anyone already owning at least one compatible module and includes a pilotable Su-25 for free.
Along with DCS World, Eagle Dynamics announced Combined Arms. More an add-on to existing aircrafts and helicopeter simulators than a stand-alone game (although it's possible to play without player-controlled aircrafts), Combined Arms is a dedicated tool to direct ground battles, and, if needed, take direct control of ground forces (tanks and such, no infantry).
The newest addition to Eagle Dynamics' series of aircrafts is the P-51 Mustang; on Eagle Dynamics' forums everyone wished for a fighter, many were thinking about the F-15C and ED delivers a classic piston-driven fighter...which sounds quite out of place in a world filled with hi-tech vehicles.
But so far no Eagle Dynamics simulation ever let virtual pilots down and the previews on their site is more than promising.
Combined Arms and P-51 Mustang are currently in beta and like A-10C before them, they can be pre-purchased to automatically enter the beta program.
I quite like that flight simulations are getting back into the spotlight.
