As some people on here know i'm a rather big fan of the DS, and a even bigger fan of odd and unusual games. The DS had a fantastic mix of games, some were purely games and some were utility software. The game i'm covering today is a bit of both.
Meet Bikkuriman daijiten

Bikkuriman is pretty much exclusively a Japanese thing so i'll give a little history lesson of exactly what Bikkuriman is. Back in the 1980's the Japanese snack company Lotte created a wafer snack called Bikkuriman (supriseman) inside each pack was a rather bland chocolate & peanut wafer snack and a sticker.

These stickers were highly collectable, there were many in each series but the rarest of the rare were called head stickers these were usually very ornate hologram ones, some were so rare that you would have to buy hundreds of packs to find one.

The most famous series of these were the devils vs angels series it ran for many years throuout the 80's 31 series in total, they still make bikkuriman to this very day and they are still collected by fans but the 80's series was the most popular. Nowdays the stickers can fetch a lot of money some of the rarer head stickers are now worth hundreds of pounds each, there's still a big demand for these stickers even now.

And this brings us back to the game, in 2007 the games developer 3 o'clock created a DS game which is a digital encyclopedia of Bikkuriman stickers from the devils vs angels series. Fans that can't afford to collect the real ones could buy this instead, it contains digital recreations of over 2000 stickers basically the complete set of all 31 series. The game is split into 2 halves there is a quiz mode that tests your knowledge of the stickers and the characters, and then there's the actual buying and viewing portion of the game.
When you play the quiz you win points for correct answers, these points are like currency and you can use them to buy bikkuriman packs from the shop. It's a recreation of the buying experience as the stickers are randomly packed however you are not left with a mountain of wafers to eat after going on a buying spree, any head stickers or rares make a noise as you pull them from the packs. As you buy more and more your library will begin to fill and you will see the percentage score eventually get to 100%.
Viewng your collection has a lot of options, the stickers are recreated amazingly well along with the gimicks that some of them had. A lot had special foil or embossed finishes, some were hologram or 3D holograms. Some had multiple layers you could peel off, some were clear and some had ink that reacted to the light making their names appear, some had scratch off coverings and some were parts of a bigger picture that you could assemble. Each of these features can be found in the digital form which i found really cool. The character trivia also appears along with any variants like the variant ones that were packed in the ice lolly series and there is a powerup screen showing what each character can powerup/evolve into & you can tap on any of the stickers to jump to that entry in the encyclopedia.
I recorded a video of some of the game along with most of the sticker gimicks, i wanted to show more of the fantastic artwork but i was limited for recording time but this should give a small idea of what the game is like.
While this game was made for fans i actually came in the opposite way around i discovered the game first and then ended up becoming a fan of the stickers, the artwork on them is amazing it's quirky and unique it's based on various mythology from around the world along with random sillyness thrown in, black Zeus is my favourite character. I really wish i could own the real ones as the game sadly doesn't replicate the shinyness of the metallic ones but that's a minor thing. If i win the lottery they are all mine for real.
The game was released in 2 versions, there was the regular version and then the limited edition which was an Amazon Japan exclusive of just 3000 copies, what made it special is the DS game was packaged like the original snacks were with the DS case taking place of the wafer and inside were a couple of big stickers along with a spare copy of the outer packaging to save.
