A new genre... Could this work?

    Someone mentioned this on GR.

How about, a game, that used, say a dancemat. And a lightgun at the same time. Could it work?

The only was I could think of, is sidestepping using the left and right on the dancemat. And going forwards and backwards using it too.

Meh. I though it was a good idea at first. Maybe not aye?

I think it may be a bit confusing to co-ordinate your feet and aiming at the same time. The system used in Konamis game (Police 24/7 iirc) seemed more sensible with a camera sensing your motion.

No, no, no! You've got it all wrong! All wrong!
In the future I have a dream...
          I have a dream.

A dream with a circular room. On that wall a 360 degress full motion video is projected of such quality that your eyes melt.

Into this room you enter. One wireless light gun in each hand.

Suddenly the room is plunged into darkness. You hear them enter the room. Only one thing to do.

Ducking, dodging and weaving, you take each one of them out. Swinging your guns in every direction.

          Welcome, welcome to Equilibrium...

If done properly, I think it could a good idea. It could be an evolution of the lightgun shooter genre, giving players some freedom on where they go. Sort of like combining a FPS and LGS. Either that, or they could use the eye-toy for something like this. E

ither way, I don't think people shoudl dismiss the idea right away. Everyone complains about a lack of variety in games these days, and something like this could add some freshness to a genre that went stale a long time ago.

hehe we've been experimenting with this sort of thing.
Counterstrike with a dancemat + joypad can do some serious damage to your brain.

Resident Evil Gun Survivor already does most of the above. Using a Guncon 2 the player can move around using the built-in D-pad and perform a dodge move using the X button. When you encounter enemies you can then cap them in the normal lightgun manner. If you are accurate you can get one hit kills on the nice zombies.
The only real restriction lies in the simplistic movement which is the traditional Resi forward / back.
When moving around the gun is 'holstered' but can be brought to aim by clicking the trigger.
I think it's a great game and I'm surprised no-one else has produced anything like it.

EDIT: I meant Dead Aim on the PS2 not Survivor on the PS1.

You could use the left and right buttons on the dancmat to turn your character on the screen...

I think it could definately work. Hope someone trys it at least.

I thought Starsky and Hutch had a control method like this, although correct me if I'm wrong...
One person drove, and the other shot with a lightgun. I guess you could drive one handed if you were good...

In Starsky & Hutch you can use a lightgun and a steering wheel simultaneously.

One of the programmers had the idea for a dancing game involving the characters from the TV series, where you could use a dance mat and a lightgun simultaneously. The publisher didn't want to waste time on it so it was dropped, it could come back for the sequel, it's just a case of wether it really would be worth it. We'd be demanding that the user would have to have 3 peripherals to get full enjoyment out of the game. It would probably only be a bonus or unlockable at best.

I put forward the idea of having a 2-player "dance-off". Where one player would shoot a part of the on-screen dance mat, while the oppsing player did the same to the 1st player, while stepping on the corresponding direction where his dance mat had been shot. So in effect they would be looking at the screen shooting each others dance mats and jumping around like mad loons. It sounds quite fun in theory, but would probably prove impractical in real life.

thank you. Ill just jot that down for when I eventually end up in the industry.

just kidding, but I wouldnt post potentially good gaming ideas on any forum. Not unless you had some way of proving at a later date that you created it.
Never know who might steal it and make a fortune with it.

Personally I want to see a new genre involving trampolines and men with guns.

                          Sounds great but expensive too.
