    DVI monitor switch problem

    Setup:
PC with Radeon 9800XT, one DVI and one VGA out. Catalyst 6.9 and relative CCC.
Two monitors, both a Samsung 215TW, one DVI and VGA input.
Primary monitor is hooked via DVI, secondary via VGA.
    OS Windows XP SP3

I've just bought a Gefen 4:1 HDMI switch thinking of future consoles (PS3 and X360, of course); works fine, primary monitor is connected through two DVI-to-HDMI cables.

Everything works fine until I try to switch back to PC from any other input if the PC is turned on: Windows detects that the primary monitor is disconnected and switches over to the secondary monitor. If I switch back on the PC input the primary monitor remains off until I have Windows search for it (Screen Options->Advanced Tab or via the Catalyst Control Center).
Windows detects the monitor and works fine, however it's now the secondary monitor and I have to fiddle around a bit to switch back to the original configuration...it takes less than a minute, but it's a bit irritating to do everytime I switch between sources.

I've tried to disable automatic display detection on the CCC but with no success.

Simplest solution would be to use the VGA port on the primary monitor too, but the Dreamcast is already there and I've both monitors profiled and calibrated between themselves and, well, I think DVI looks better than VGA, and it's also easier to customize when it comes to color calibration.

Does anyone knows how to make Windows or the Ati CCC not to automatically detect monitors?
