Okay so you have to pay, but it is a thing of beauty and surprisingly informative. A hurricane is currently mashing the caribbean as we speak, but I knew that anyway as it was staring me in the face.
I had a go with that and decided to remove it after a bit to find that it wouldn't allow me to. It seems to be a standard problem after looking online and I had to manually delete quite a few files using a guide somebody had made for people.

Any news on the Mac specific sub-forum yet Mods? It may be useful to possibly have a seperate one for software recommendations now this seems to be getting quite a bit of use?

Here's an app recommendation for deleting stuff... AppZapper!

Introducing AppZapper. Simply drag one or more apps onto AppZapper. Then, watch as it finds the extra files and lets you delete them with one click.

Charles has changed the forum name to PC & Mac, don't think the activity really warrants a new separate forum.

Starting threads either [PC] or [Mac] would help specialists in either system identify threads of interest.

Feel free to start a thread for Mac recommended software/shareware etc (if there isn't already one).

Okay, having given up trying to connect my PS3 to my iMac via the in built Airport extreme, I was wondering if it is possible to add another ethernet connection to my mac somehow and do it that way, and run the new wired connection to my PS3. So basically use the mac as the bridge between my modem and my PS3.

I have tried Medialink but my PS3 just refuses to connect for some reason, even though I have trawled the web (and this forum) for a solution. My Wii connected first time after trying it as a test to make sure the problem wasn't at the mac end. Internet sharing ON and firewall OFF.

I could use a wired connection 100% of the time but it requires me to unplug the ethernet cable coming from my mac to my modem, reboot said modem and plug in the ethernet cable coming from my the PS3. Perfect but I can't use the internet on my mac, whilst using the online PS3. One or the other. Aargh.

Maybe I need a router of some sort.

**EDIT**: Seem to have found the wireless solution. Changed some setting in terminal from 4 to 0 and Medialink now works along with net gaming. Bizarre.

AppCleaner does the same thing and is free

It doesn't have the cool zap effect when you use it, though

The problem with computers is that you can program them. And that means you can program them badly, hence the odd app here and there with poor ability to uninstall.

The sound effect is soooo worth it... well, not really. I got AppZapper in a MacHeist bundle, which was great value. Worth keeping an eye on them.

I've been using PCs with various flavours of Windows for years and never got to use a Mac - EVER!

                    Today was my lucky day!

A few guys in the office are Mac users, and somehow today I was given a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 2002 (model M8493). From what I can tell it's virtually standard, had a 250mb zip drive installed and memory upgraded to 768MB, I'd like to put a DVD burner in it and a USB2.0 PCI card if possible as I plan on replacing my Shuttle XPC with the Mac.

I'm gradually going to read this entire thread, already found Muddys list of recommended freeware which looks good. I won't get a chance to tinker with it until the weekend (got to get it home for a start), but I powered it up today just to see OSX - crikey, it's beautiful.

It's going to be a steep learning curve I think. It has no restore discs, how easy is it to bugger up a mac, should I be worried about not being able to restore it?

That's it for now, I'm sure I'll return at a later date to ask questions!

                    Pete

Woohoo, somebody who probably (hopefully) knows even less about Macs than I do.

OSX is fantastic and the biggest adjustment for me was/is that I'm used to thinking around bad design in Windows as to how I should be doing things that I want to do but now I just need to remember that if something seems like an obvious way to do something, then it's probably the way that OSX does it.

It's almost like removing an interface layer between you and the hardware for me and the hardware just does what you want it to do. I really like using it and apart from the fact that I still have loads of stuff on my PC which I need to move across the PC would have been given to somebody in the family already.

We've got a 2001 Dual 733 G4 literally *packed* with hard drives and USB drives hanging out the back of it as our back up server at work (used to be my production Mac when it arrived in 2001). The model just before the Quicksilvers.

It's bloody bomb proof. Besides being moved between studios, it's never been off. In 7 years. Never missed a beat. Such a solid machine, I've never used anything as reliable.

It's running the latest OS X 10.5, shoe horned on with an install helper app, and besides being slightly slow (for production work), makes an excellent server.

It was a bit embarrasing when I said to a guy - where's the CD drive? He points it out to me, I then spend a little while looking at the front of the case for an eject button. Then clicking all over the place for the CD drive in the operating system before giving up. Was then shown the eject key on the keyboard - ooops

I can't wait to have a play with it, I just spent an hour or so cleaning the Pro Keyboard up, removing crumbs and hair that's snuck in it.

Muddy, you're not wrong about the G4 being bomb proof, I was flabbergasted when I got hold of it and then popped the side of to have a peek inside and see how it's put together.

Once you've got your stuff on. Command button and space is the only way you'll need to search for stuff again. Its just fantastic, just remember to name your files properly so you can find them easily, obviously.

Ive joined the club! My black macbook 2.4ghz arrived today from the apple refurb store - at ?699 it looks to be a bit of a bargain considering the original RRP (fingers crossed though as im at work so havent had a chance to fire it up yet!).

Never had an Apple computer before so im sure i will be trawling this thread for tips. Will need something to replace bitcomet on my PC as my download manager, and i need to make sure i can successfully get all my itunes music, playlists and album art across from the PC in tact.

Im also toying with the idea of upgrading the ram to 4gb from crucial. Do i need to buy the pack with 4gb though to make sure its all matched, or can i just get the 2gb extra and pop that in without it affecting the smooth running of the machine?

I think some sort of carry case/protective case is going to be needed as well, as id hate to scratch that premium priced black casing!

Any other tips welcome! Will be plunging in tonight to have a good play.

It'l have 2 x 1gig sticks so you need to buy 2 x 2gig sticks from crucial. Upgrading is easy peasy.
I recommend a Crumpler slip case for it.
Why do you need a download 'manager'?

If you stick the mac and pc on the same network the mac will see the PC no problem and you can just copy all your music across.

                                Good luck!
