    Critics Club 41: Smith

    Because Cutmymilk enquired

Next up is Kevin Smith. He's got a few films under his belt as a low budget director who tried to go big but ended up back on the budget film making path. Currently busying himself up with several projects, which is his best so far?

Haha! I think this will be the most popular yet!

Okay, so there's one massive duffer (Cop Out) but it's mostly very very good. His best is probably Dogma, though I think Clerks is still my favourite. Chasing Amy and Clerks 2 would be in the running too. I really wish more directors would create their own mini universes. This is what draws me towards the Askewniverse. Brilliant every time a character from Clerks, say, is referenced years down the line.

From a complete movie point of view, for me, it's Dogma.

However, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is so immense in it's stupidity and over the top scenario-ness that it has a very special place in my heart.

"Ooh, what a lovely tea party!"

I remember watching Mallrats once on BBC randomly and enjoying it, the rest is crap IMHO. Cop Out had some proper LOL moments in, Bruce Willis ruined it by looking completely uninterested throughout.

No matter how many times I watch J&SBSB I piss myself laughing. ****ing great movie.

Clerks still my sentimental fav though, "Olaf, Berserker!"

Everything before Jersey Girl is gold imo. Grew up watching those movies and made some good friends because of our like of those movies.

Jersey Girl isn't as bad as people make out imo, i liked it when i first saw it.

Clerks 2 is ok, i dunno, i like it but there's just something that stops me from saying yeah it's great.

Zack & Mire was fun for the first time i watched it but the sex scene with Rogan and Banks actually makes me wince....it's so bad. I haven't watched it again.

Cop Out i didn't even bother seeing.

Red State i ****ing loved, i didn't think i was gonna like it but i really enjoyed it and have watched it a couple of times more since.

Looking forward to Tusk now, not so sure about him doing Clerks 3......he should just leave it alone.

Some great speeches in a lot of these. The labourers on the Death Star in Clerks, the Hulk pep talk in Mallrats, fingercuffs in Chasing Amy and Dogma's various and surprisingly balanced comments on religion.

J&SBSB is the most bonkers of all though. So many great moments.

I particularly enjoyed this vital plot development:

                Dogma by miles for me.
Though I have a soft spot for Clerks.

Am looking forward to Tusk too as Red State was a return to form after a couple of real stinkers.

Clerks for me, all sorts of awesome.
Mallrats a very close second. Chasing Amy and dogma were very good too.

Was all about the dialogue for me with the early films:

Blue Collar Man: Excuse me, I don't mean to interrupt, but, uh, what are you talking about?
Randal Graves: The ending of "Return of the Jedi".
Dante Hicks: My friend here's trying to convince me that any independent contractors who were working on the uncompleted Death Star were innocent victims when it was destroyed by the Rebels.

Dante Hicks: I'm not even supposed to be here today

                  Just a great film.
