Relating to our Godzilla discussion, I just finished a book on the history of Godzilla movies and one thing that genuinely surprised me was how poor they have performed generally in Japan. The originals in the late 50s and early 60s did well and, since then, Godzilla has struggled badly only being revitalised a couple of times after that for one off movies without being able to build on that each time. The films were doing worse and worse through the Millennium era which led to Final Wars and the odd move of doubling the budget. In spite of the publicity of being the last one and featuring a crazy amount of monsters, it made only half its budget back in the cinema performing no better than the previous films. So even in Japan, Godzilla appears to be pretty niche.
Another oddity is how they got bundled there as a double bill with animated films such as the Hamtaro films. While the 70s movies are clearly children’s films, the later ones don’t quite seem to fit. Anyway, I came away thinking that, outside of the core fans who will see them all (*raises hand*), Toho have struggled to find what to do with Godzilla.
