Deadline has broken a story that a commercial unit of the BBC called BBC StoryWorks has links with Huawei and CGTN despite both being sanctioned or banned by the UK, with the unit also producing Chinese state content despite senior journalists pleading for the unit to sever ties with the Chinese government.
The BBC has backed Storyworks saying that the content it makes for China doesn't get in the way of objective reports being produced or have any questionable outcomes but it has also refused to disclose how much money the unit is earning despite the unit working with nine state owned companies and facing intense criticism for doing so.
The BBC has refused to explain how the contracts process for Storyworks operates and also why conflict of interest complaints by senior journalists have been ignored.
