My D700 went to a new home, so there was a gap on the shelf.

That's the last of the shopping done though.

Managed to get out with the D3 this weekend and despite being a bit of a weighty camera, the results are fabulous from the camera - trouble is it makes me want a D5 now

Know what you mean, my D4 shots have a 'look' that is different and better than my D610, my boss has a D3/D4 and says the same re his D700.

It's not a case of emperors new clothes either, I'm sure could 'blind taste' sets of shots taken with D4 against my D610. Since I got my D610 of all my plane shots there are a couple which I think are very good, first time out with the D4 I got three in one session including my personal favourite of any shot I've ever taken.

Personally I think Nikon (and no doubt Canon) hobble the non-flagship cameras. Senscore agrees, the D3s clobbers my D610 and don't get me wrong I'm still a big champion for Nikon's cheapest FF.

Really glad you are liking the D3 - hope it continues, D6 may be out next year...

I doubt it's a case of "hobbling" the lower in the range cameras, just that they use the better silicon for the flagships and they tend to be manufactured in Japan where the build quality seems to be higher. You're probably more likely to hobble them by using budget glass on them and my dilemma at the moment is whether to upgrade to f/2.8 lenses or not. Also considering getting the Sigma f/4 24-105mm Art lens as I'm using one of my older 24-85mm f/2.8-4 D lenses which I had for my F90x. Most of my lenses are DX.

I picked up a new camera on the cheap, a Canon G1X. Had a play with it this weekend and the image quality from them is pretty impressive. I did notice that in the raw files there's significant vignetting at the widest angle, which appears to be cropped out on the JPGs (it's a different framing from the raw). If you didn't do Raw+JPG you'd never have realised. It's pretty crap at macro though and it's not a fast camera. However, given the type of shots I take, it's a nice small (not tiny) camera to have to hand.

How do we know you didn't just put Calpol in his water for the photo?

I got another cam off eBay on the cheap (£9 for a Canon Powershot S2 IS), it's only 5 megapixels, but I've been quite impressed by the images that it takes - fairly fast glass and a relatively chunky lens given the sensor size.

Vid on it should be on my YouTube channel soon.

Nice shot Marty, when I switched from film to digital in 2003 I was a gnats whisker away from getting a 5mp Minolta Dimage 7 but went instead for a Fuji S2pro since I had an fm2 + lenses.
Always had a lot of time for the decent 5mp cameras as they produce really good pics.

                          Moving on... have you seen this;

No, first time I've seen that - seems that it's a fairly niche product and a long time to wait for a photo. Having said that, I think I've recently found an undeveloped can of B&W film that must be a good few years old. Really should get that done and find out what's on it as I've no idea.

Picked up an interesting camera from eBay, the Sony F717 (yes the camera does look that ridiculous - that's a Nikon D50 and Olympus C50 in the background).

The neat thing about this camera is it has a built in nightmode, which removes the visible light only filter leaving it UV and IR sensitive. Normally you can only shoot this in the automode with it limited to a f2 aperture and 1/60th second exposure (this was a move by Sony due to media hysteria about it being an X-Ray camera). However, with a rare earth magnet you can cause the camera to lift the filter and make the camera work in all modes removing the exposure restriction.

Only downside is it uses Sony's Memory Stick Duo (not even the pro version) so finding memory cards is a bit problematic.

Should make for some interesting weekend fun.

Crikey not seen one of those in a while, at the time I was pondering the Minolta Dimage the 717 was also on the market, DP Review did a test of I think five of the current cameras and the 717 took the best shots but I think it didn't come top strangely.

I think it takes standard full size cards rather than the Duo (smaller variety).

I'll have a look around I might have one knocking around you can have.
