Tesla has been making a profit on their considerable turnover (several billions) since the end of 2019 (although strictly speaking, this hasn't all been contributable to sales).

I'm no tree-hugger, but it bemuses me when these billionaires keep going "LEt'S gO tO Mars!" rather than address any issues on Earth.

You don't think the research into the science and technology required to reach and sustain humans on Mars might have a smidgin of benefit for issues on Earth?

Hopefully it does because lord knows Musk isn't concerned by it.

CAT Scans, electrolytic silver iodizer water purification, foil blankets, freeze dried food - all bourne out of space exploration.

Mars programmes are likely to improve crop growth on Earth, given being able to generate food to survive is going to be an important asset to sustained presence on the planet. And not just potatoes.

Bit late to address this planet’s issues now, thats why there so interested.

That’s kind of like trying to bring a brick to life rather than treat a sick person. Mars is lifeless and hostile. All life on Earth would have to go through an apocalypse of completely devastating proportions before Mars or indeed any planet we can reach becomes a better prospect.

That doesn’t make the exploration worthless of course, because it’s a step in a far greater journey we’ll have to take at some point. And as Marty says, so much tends to come from this kind of exploration.

But it’s also important to remember that Musk is a total knob. That’s a key thing here.

What has space exploration ever done for us...

                  Teflon is another.

                  ...but not the aquaduct.

There is a whole wiki article on it.
                    Couple of interesting ones

                    Scratch proof lenses and LEDs.

                      You forgot the Fisher-Price SpacePen.

Couldn't they just invest their cajillion dollars into improving crop growth without the flashy Mars travel?

Musk is a grifter who has convinced a bunch of Reddit twerps that he is some kind of eccentric genius. All the companies are massively overvalued due to speculation too.

Just read this article on the subject of Musk today which does a pretty good job chronicling many of the ways you could take issue with him.

Does it cover that he's a knob? Honestly, that time he went for a rescue worker was the end of it for me.

Elon Musk is too preoccupied with whether he can, that he doesn't stop to think if he should.

I've always had to assume there's something about him in person, because he's such a terrible public speaker - and that's an unusual quality for someone so successful.
