Voting Bond - For England, James

We've been there through the cinema release day hypes and the bank holiday afternoon fillers.
We've seen the serious loves of Teresa di Vincenzo and Vesper Lynd rise up to him as the corny named Pussy Galore and Plenty O'Toole fell for him.
We've seen friends betray him and a historic villain be retconned into his missing brother.

The Bond franchise has been going for 56 years now in film format and the formula to a Bond movie is well known at this point. Now 24 official entries exist with the 25th set to bring another Bond's tale to an end before he 'regenerates' into a new actors form. The original twenty films told mostly independent tales with only occasional hints to past installments including five of the post-OHMSS entries referencing his dead wife but the last four have rebooted with a stronger connective tissue for now that also influences their strengths and weaknesses.

Spurred on by todays ropey list in the Guardian:

Take on the tough Bond mission of:

This is one I'd need to build up rather than slap all 25 in the correct order in one go so I'll begin by placing the ones I find obvious and slip in the others as my mind places them:

        -Goldeneye
        -Casino Royale
        -The World is Not Enough
        -Skyfall
        -Tomorrow Never Dies
        -The Living Daylights
        -License to Kill
        -Spectre
        -Die Another Day
        -Quantum of Solace

That's also my favourite but more for the baddie helicopter pilot who ends up with said missiles in her tuchas and Barbara Bach who plays the spy, both the best bond girls ever and its a great movie

For me connery is the best bond, but Roger moores bond movies just seemed to have more fun, more laughs and the best burds

The Connery ones, OHMSS, and early Moore ... not necessary in that exact order. I'll have to have a think about that.

They were great because they were based on the books. Once they ran out of books they pretty much just 'did the formula'. This is why I was excited about Boyle and Hodge's Bond being based on having a 'great idea'.

Never liked Brosnan, too silky, you have to believe Bond can kill (*okay, this lets me down on Moore a bit, but there were other factors in his early ones that made them great) ... Dalton, not believable as Bond for me ... Craig is good but the films are over-rated after Casino Royale.

I've lined Spectre up for a rewatch, hopefully some time this week. I remember the opening brief chase and a sequence involving a plane but that's about it on the action front which seems quite bad given it's the most recent entry

I'm not sure about ranking them all but I'll list some of my favourites below:

                    From Russia with Love
                    Goldfinger
                    Licence to Kill
                    Goldeneye
                    Casino Royale
                    Skyfall

Agree with BB, Spy Who Loved Me for best film with Connery best Bond and Roger second. Roger's films were more light hearted but had some great stunts.
The songs were better too with the Connery/Moore films.

                      As for Skyfall we were here a couple of weeks ago;

I don't know the movies well enough to rank them, nor do I have a favourite or least favourite movie but Roger Moore is my favourite Bond. He bought some cheekiness to the role, some comedy, some fun, and I like that. The current Bond (I forget his name) plays the role way too serious for my tastes.

OK Bottom 5 (no particular order):

Never Say Never Again (1983) (Connery is going through the motions and being non-canon, feels weird)
Die Another Day (2002) (Urgh, invisible cars was tough to believe, but surfing on a tsunami was jumpink the shark)
Moonraker (1979) (Used to love this, but upon rewatch, it's terrible. Just terrible. The double-take pigeon especially)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) ("That never happened to the other fella" and the school girls all hitting on him was too much)
Casino Royale (1967) (It's not that bad, but it doesn't work as either a comedy or spy caper (backwards gun was cool)

Top 5 (in no particular order):

Spectre (2015) (great baddie, locations and conclusion of story arc.)
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) (Triple nipple, Scaramanga, Nick Nack, island base, fun house ending)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) (Lotus submarine, undersea base, Barbara Bach's bust, Caroline Munro's bust, ski chase)
GoldenEye (1995) ("For England, James?" "I am Invinvible!", tank chase, opening dam sequence, great bad guy)
The Living Daylights (1987) (Darker Bond, sniper suit, pipeline escape, cello case chase, that beautiful Aston Martin with skis)

                            I also enjoyed:
                            Octopussy (1983)
                            Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
                            Goldfinger (1964)
                            You Only Live Twice (1967)
                            A View to a Kill (1985)
                            Casino Royale (2006)
                            Skyfall (2012)
