My son has been playing. It does look fun. However, the graphics seem to need a PC from 2035. Perhaps that's why it hasn't released yet

Releasing it would be fine. People will still buy the ships. To those playing it now it doesn’t even matter that it’s unreleased; they’re playing it already. If it had VR support I might even venture back in but the performance in spaceports is pretty rough and I have a decent enough pc and am only playing at 1080 so VR would cause pcs to explode.
