Ha, that's a bit dismissive with little information to go on, Nakamura!

Both Dying Light and Dead Island are open-world, first-person, zombie-themed, weapon-crafting, main-story-with-side-quests adventures.
The day/night cycle and parkour elements in Dying Light are the main differences but Dead Island came out four years earlier on the previous generation of consoles.

I don't know how you're working out that Dead Island 2 looks "crap", with so little information to base that opinion on!

I'm glad you enjoyed Dying Light so much, but both that and Dead Island were developed by Techland, so you can't have one without the other. Imagine if you'd avoided Dying Light because you thought it was a rip-off of Dead Island!

Plus it's good that a UK developer is getting to make the sequel.

I'm curious what Sumo do with it, it'll need something unique to keep my interest as Riptide pretty much wore me out on the first game and whilst Dying Light had some interesting inprovements I found the game to be a chore by the second half.

i was looking forward to Dead Island 2, but it just vanished off the radar from release schedules. I think they pooped their panties when Dying light came out....

Nice analogy, but I think it's more about creative differences:
UPDATE: Timo Ullmann, managing director of Yager Development, has said that the company's departure from Dead Island 2 …

"Timo Ullmann, managing director of Yager Development, has said that the company's departure from Dead Island 2 was down to a difference in vision.

In a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, Ullmann reiterated the company's commitment to both AAA development and its own independence - an increasingly difficult double-act in the modern games industry.
"Our team is made of the best creative minds and tech specialists, who all share a common identity," he said. "The team worked with enthusiasm to take Dead Island 2 to a new level of quality. However, Yager and Deep Silver's respective visions of the project fell out of alignment, which led to the decision that has been made.""

I've seen quite extensive footage and interviews of the game. They have stated it will be online based and have no ending. 'Quests' will be added in time to give the game life.

All the footage so far is of just walking around, killing lots of zombies. Given the open, online based nature of the game, it is looking every bit like it is bowing to the multiplayer route of little substance.

Dying Light felt like an evolution of Dead Island. Dead Island 2 feels like the traditional retreat into mediocrity, just like games like Dead Space 3.

              That's better, Nak!

You've seen more stuff than me, then, because the only footage I've seen is from two years ago at Gamescom (5 mins) and EGX (20 Mins). Hopefully in that time it's made more progression from 2014 and Sumo Digital will produce something different from Dying Light but still fun.

I loved the co-op element in the first Dead Island, so I'm hoping the eight-player gameplay they promised makes it into the final product. The MMO-style gameplay is what drove Yager to drop the story that they'd written, so who knows where Sumo will take it.

It'll be a while until it's finished, so hopefully they'll allay your fears of mediocrity when it finally comes out.

I hope so too bud. When I finished Dying Light I came away badly really wanting more. The story in it was a good driver, yes it was nothing special but it was done well enough to give you a sense of purpose. Also the sheer scale of it was awe inspiring at times.
I know Dead Island is a different franchise but the share many similarities. I didn't exactly enjoyed the first in that series but the potential was there.

I was pleasantly surprised how much you enjoyed Dying Light. It was off my radar until you enthused about it.
I'll check it out when I finally go current gen (approx. 2021)!

I was surprised myself, it just struck a chord. I think it's because whilst it has the usual modern trappings, it also has a real fear factor, mainly at night when you basically become walking steak. Also the side quests were genuinely entertaining with some zany characters in there.

Tolga and Fatin are my two favourite NPC's in any game I've ever played.

I'll deffo keep an eye out for this.

As I said earlier, I really enjoyed the first game and just seeing this thread pop up gave me flashbacks to playing the game.

So many games rely on darkness for tension, but this managed to be really tense, even in tropical sunshine!

                              Dead Island 2 today:

THQ Nordic has announced that new entries in their “Saints Row” and “Dead Island” game franchises are in development as part of a new report to investors via their official site. Volition is reportedly “deep in development” on another mainline entry in the “Saints Row” franchise, the fifth one overall in the series and the […]

Dambuster Studios have taken over from Sumo Digital as the third company to try and tackle what should have been an incredibly simple sequel to a last gen game, Dead Island 2 is still coming... someday
