Reccomend me a car for 4k

I need to buy a new car as mine in knackered. A bloke at work is selling a 2007 diesel Audi a3 with 57k miles on it 2L. For 5k. When I asked if this was an ok deal on the car thread it was suggested that it might be a bit **** really as the car is pretty old.

I would prefer to spend between 3 and 4k really or less would be even better. I'm not that knowledgable when it comes to cars (obviously) and I just want something that's reliable for my shortish work commute and can do a few miles at weekends.

cars I've been looking at: polos, fiestas, golfs, Yaris

EB posted a follow up to say it's probably ok for that mileage - all the others were 3X that amount at that age and price.

Get an insurance quote before you dive in.

Yaris won all the awards going, so from that perspective, it will probably fill your needs. I am biased towards Japanese cars though.

57k for that Audi sounds suspiciously close to 60k which is a normal "Get the cambelt done" mileage - ask if it has been done already. It can be expensive. ?400+ (it's not something you can skip - it if goes, the engine is normally destroyed from within).

My daughter has a 2009 latest shape Fiesta, can't knock it, boot is also a decent size, great reliable car for the money. Lower end of the scale insurance wise.

For my tuppence, all cars look good in 4K.

Small diesel cars are very much in demand. Might be better to look at something larger to get better value for money.

I was in the market for a car (scrapped my last one in October 2013). I didn't want to spend too much. I'd been checking my local used car dealer regularly. I checked out a Nissan Pixo at 4K but it was a bit on the small side (I'm 6' 5" tall) so left it until after the weekend.

I went in and saw they had a Kia and Hyundai. 11 reg with low mileage at around 5K. I'd never bought a foreign car before. Checked them both out and had test drive. The Kia still had over 3 years warranty left and the Hyundai about 16 months. I preferred the look of the Hyundai and it felt very solid on the road. It was a basic 3 door hatch, an I20, so Fiesta sized with a 1.2 petrol engine and felt surprisingly nippy. Road tax was ?30 a year (?140 for the 1.4 Kia). For a basic model it had everything I wanted... Air Con, CD, Electric Windows, ABS and Central Locking with remote.

I went for it (only 22k miles) and got it for just over 5K which included Road Tax, Service, MOT and a new tyre. I must say I am very pleased with it, so if you see one in your price range it would be worth a look. On looks, it is quite similar to a Vauxhall Corsa, from the front anyway (I prefer it to a Corsa).

Yeah, the i20 is has a decent look - stands out a bit whilst still remaining attractive within the target market.

I remember seeing a car in the Buy and Sell for €80 several years ago. Always regretted not buying that.
