I want the Bond franchise to rediscover a sense of fun and of Bond being the coolest guy in the room. There being a sense of him being a professional weapon in of himself too. Hate to say it but DC just isn't a cool guy, he plays a miserable potato faced lump of a 007 who then doubles it down by being a miserable potato faced lump of an actor about the role in real life.

With this era wrapping up I'd rank Craig as 5th of the 6.
I thought he got the tone of the character down pretty well in Casino Royal but that was directed by Martin Campbell who also directed Goldeneye (seems he has a thing for directing the first entry for a new actor playing the role). After that Craig has swayed between being true to the character and seeming perhaps a bit too serious (its probably why traditional series staples started to creep back in with Skyfall).

When they cast a new actor they should go for a refresh as that's what brought audiences back after Die Another Day went off the deep end and Casino Royale was actually a pretty good film in general, not just a good Bond film.

Yep, in Royale he's a more serious and quiet natured Bond that thos before him but there's a sly humour about him. A few quips that play on him having a dry sense of humour which plays really well into why it's convincing that he develops a bond with Vesper as she's similarly inclined. From Quantum onward he's mostly just miserable which I recall really standing out on the train scene in Spectre where they rip off the train scene from Royale. Bond chats with Madeleine but its a pale imitation. She's the one girl he walked away from the life for successfully and it never convinces because the chemistry isn't there. Part of it is the casting, Eva Green just elevates material in Royale, part of it is because Bond doesn't have any charm left by the time Spectre comes around.

I think that's part of the issue selling this latest film, the events seem triggered by her seeming betrayal of Bond but having him betrayed by a character I don't care about, let alone one who is the daughter of one of the franchises noted bad guys is hardly shocking revelations to jump off from. It's amazing how much I've grown to dislike plot progression in Bond films. In an ironic reflection given the other thread, I prefer Bond to just be isolated films.

Yeah, but they've gone the DC route and jumped into linked films and forced the links.

If they reboot and plan a story arc, it would work a lot better.

It definitely feels forced and rushed, it's amazing anyone involved ever signed off on some of it like the brothers storyline. By comparison it's another way where it feels like the franchise is getting schooled by Mission Impossible. They've very late come around to retroactively drawing in past films to make the entire franchise a contained arc and its being done to a much better standard.

I don't know anything about the new one as I've avoided all trailers and spoilers.
It's got James Bond and an Aston Martin in it.

If you've seen the trailers for the previous four films you've seen the trailer for this one It's like EON worked out how to make expansion packs for films

You've done quite well then. I'm not sure how many trailers there have been for the upcoming one but like a friend said after watching the latest one that he "doesn't need to watch the film now as its pretty much been covered in the trailers".

One thing that definitely hasn't been overdone is the new theme. I've been seeing and hearing loads of stuff Bond related now that the film is finally getting released but nowhere seems interested in revisiting the new theme song since it was revealed early this year. I literally couldn't recall anything about it, not even a note, off the top of my head. Seems a real dud

Guys, I gotta tell you, I'm really psyched for this tonight.

I've caned the Craig films, played the boardgame, listened to the soundtrack and I'm getting pizza and beers with my mates beforehand, it's reviewing well and it's going to be a great night!

If you could share your general thoughts later that would be good (the more general, the better).

A friend wants to go see this so I'm going to hold out until he's available rather than go to the cinema ASAP to see it given its a long one.
