Nintendo completely dominate Japan again, no one even gets a look in at the moment.

Absolutely phenomenal sales of Splatoon 3 in Japan in its first three days on the market, according to nintendolife.

Yeah, almost 3.5M units in Japan alone.

That actually makes it Japan's fastest-selling videogame of all time. Bonkers.

Wait what? Is that true? How the hell did splatoon3 achieve that? Well the ungodly amount of Switches in japan helps but even still.

It's almost curious how with Splatoon it seems to have worked well releasing a new installment rather than relying on DLC for giving that game a long tail compared to Mario Kart which is really putting off MK9. There's clearly thirst for the game but the cycle is very different than other first party titles.

Sony's revenues are up again in the second quarter though service profits have taken a big hit

3.3m PS5 units shipped this quarter
5.7m have shipped this financial year so far which is significantly below what Sony had originally projected

Due to this the PS5 has now slipped behind the PS4 at the same point in its life by around 4m units.

62.5m software units were sold representing an 18% fall in sales

PS+ earnings were their best ever to though the number of subscribers fell by 3%

                  01 - Nintendo Switch - 111.08m
                  02 - PlayStation 5 - 25.00m
                  03 - Xbox Series S/X - 16.13m

Hmm. So the new, more expensive tiers have allowed them to squeeze a bit more money out of the people they've already got, but the overall pool of subscribers has reduced.

That feels like a net negative to me.

I would expect those figures to be up quite a bit if they could meet console demand, which is nuts still. They can’t though so growth is going to be limited to the manufacturing they can do, and making more out the existing base. Not a lot they can do about that.

Well, they still manufactured and sold 3.3m units. That's more than 10% of the entire total so far, so not nothing. You'd expect subscriptions to go up off the back of that, not down 3%.

That said - the new subscription tiers launched very near the end of Q2, and maybe people let their subs lapse in advance, anticipating cheap deals?

The Q3 subscriber numbers will be the acid test in terms of seeing how much of a draw the new tiers have been, I reckon.

From what I can gather PS5s are a lot more visible and obtainable than a year ago.
I've seen ps5s and seriesS on shelves. Not the seriesX though.

It could also be tied to the post-COVID drop off, with people at home less there will presumably be more lapse subs
