According to estimates by research firm IHS Markit, Microsoft's Xbox One sold 39.1 million units by March 2018 while PlayStation 4 sold 76.6.

This source link states the current gen sales through as of 31 March 2018 to be:

Playstation 4 - 76.6m units
Xbox One - Est. 39.1m units
Nintendo Switch - 17.79m units

It's been an incredibly slow march for the XBO to get out of the 30m region but it seems to be getting there and hopefully by now just have hit or be hitting the milestone whilst PS4 should be on the verge of surpassing the lifetime sales of the Playstation 3. Sales of Switch so far this year are reportedly flat compared to last year which suggests they're strong but not strong enough to meet Nintendo's 20m sales target. Presumably the momentum places the NS somewhere in the early 20m's by now.

The debut weekend sales for Red Dead Redemption 2 in the UK saw it more than double its predecessor. However, it couldn't beat FIFA 19.

UK launch sales were interesting for Red Dead Redemption 2. They came in at twice what the previous entry took at launch but were just 27% of what GTA5 hauled, also proving to be not high enough to dethrone FIFA 19 as the biggest launch of the year either.

Edit-There's some twitter updates on Era being knocked about that suggest RDR2 sold around 30%of what was shipped out. Not confirmed as yet but if true it marks the game as a big success sales wise but a bit of a disappointment if you're the sales predictor at 2K.

Is it possible that Rockstar Games spent $644 million to make its epic Wild West game, Red Dead Redemption 2? We've taken our guess.

Superman Falls I think the growing consensus is to simply disregard the GfK figures as without digital they are largely meaningless now (ZhugeEX pointed this out at ResetEra too).

I think what these figures are showing is that retail in the UK is at it lowest ebb and in a dire state (something we know), the economy is down and the UK market is probably beyond the '50% of sales are digital' mark. Remember EA was predicting 40% of their sales to be downloads at end of last year. Certainly when I was out shopping this weekend the game was out of stock in HMV and Asda and so it was pretty pointless if you were looking to buy it there and then. The game being double the sales of RDR is probably more notable.

I suspect the UK is just leading the global trends here, in part accelerated by the ineptitude of our (only) national videogame retailer and the dire state of retail in general.

True, hopefully more sales-shipped ratio info comes out. GTA etc may be mega sized hits but I still find it fascinating that a decade between titles is increasingly becoming an accepted norm, especially if it's whether it's due to market reasons, development reasons or just because they wasted years rendering horse genitalia

Sure but I think what the GfK data is starting to become is junk data and not trustworthy. Previously you could spot disappointing sales from these early figures (i.e. Dishonored 2 etc.). However even the GfK data was reporting BLOPS4 as being massively down when in actual fact is trending only slightly below WW2 at release and of which include the PC version being sold on Blizzard so up in revenue terms.

I certainly wouldn't be building a narrative about an unsuccessful game based on physical only UK data.

Perhaps it's just a sad reflection on society that gamers simply prefer killing with automatic rifles.

I think even T2 acknowledged RDR2 was never going to do GTA numbers. For me it's nothing to see here until some more reliable source or T2 starts to release figures.

Also that cost of RDR2 article has got some very questionable guesswork to it.

Worldwide total shipments for PlayStation 4 have reached 86.1 million, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended September 30, 2018.

We finally got updates on the global sales of the big 3 (ish)

Playstation 4 - 86.1m units
Xbox One - Est. 39.1m units
Nintendo Switch - 22.86m units

Switch has now officially surpassed the lifetime sales of the Gamecube and sales were up year on year however hardware sales for the next quarter would likely need to exceed those of the Wii at the peak of its popularity for Nintendo to have much chance of hitting their full year projection of 20m systems sold.

The strong performance of PS4 following the Spider-Man launch has caused the shares of Sony to rise by 15%, by comparison the year on year improvements for Nintendo couldn't hold off a 14% drop off. It seems like a reliance on a low output of first party offerings is again being raised as the reason.

Rockstar trumpets $725m Red Dead Redemption 2 sales

Rockstar has trumpeted Red Dead Redemption 2's astronomical sales, claiming it to be the second-biggest entertainment launch of all time.

The sales success of the game comes hot on the heels of shocking revelations about the human cost of the development of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar said Red Dead Redemption 2, which came out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Friday, 26th October, generated over $725m in worldwide retail sell-through during its first three days, making it the second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time behind Rockstar's own Grand Theft Auto 5, which made over $1bn in three days after it went on sale back in 2013.

Records were broken all over. Sony said Red Dead Redemption 2 saw the highest-ever pre-orders, highest day one sales and highest sales for the first three days on market for a game on PlayStation Network.
There are no volumes, but ZhugeEX on ResetEra is suggesting 12m sold if you assume everyone purchased the base edition. However with the 3 versions available that's probably a lower number sold. Also worth noting the largest videogame weekend opening of all time (although in the US most games are still Tuesday, but still).

It seems that the figures don't include digital despite the PSN PR statements, although it isn't 100% clear. So that could mean even more money flowed into Take 2's coffers as well as the above.

A couple of recent news stories:

Red Dead Redemption 2 shipments reach 17 million - Rockstar's hit game has shipped more in eight days than the original did in eight years (GI.biz)

Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold-in 17 million units, Take-Two has announced.

Rockstar's parent company revealed that the game has shipped more units into stores in eight days than the original managed in eight years.

This figure is the number of units sold to retail stores, as opposed to sold-through to consumers. There is currently no update on its sell-through figures outside of the $725 million the game made in just three days - making it the second fastest-selling entertainment product of all time behind Grand Theft Auto V.
Unfortunately every one is stating the $725m in 3 days and 17m units sold as if they are the complete picture but we are missing revenue and units sold of Digital. Which probably puts the game closer to 30m units sold already (at a guess).

-------

Activision Blizzard revenues, engagement dip - Tough comparison against last year's Destiny 2 launch takes shine off publisher's numbers even as net income grows (GI.biz)

Activision Blizzard's bottom line is heading in the right direction, even if some of the company's other numbers wouldn't quite suggest it.

Activision Blizzard today reported earnings for its fiscal third quarter (three months ended September 30), showing net income up 38% to $260 million, even as its revenue and engagement numbers receded. Total revenues were down almost 7% to $1.51 billion, while bookings were off nearly 13% year-over-year to $1.66 billion.

One culprit for the drop was a tough comparison from the previous year's third quarter, which featured the launch of Destiny 2. While the company didn't specify that as a factor in its results, it could be seen clearly in the company's console revenues, which had dropped 34% year-over-year to $347 million. Mobile and ancillary revenues were also down 11% to $523 million, partly offset by a 21% growth in PC revenues to $482 million.
During the company's investor call, COO Coddy Johnson acknowledge that Destiny 2 was underperforming. "We have not yet seen the full core reengage in Destiny, which has led to the underperformance against our expectations to-date," he said. "Some players are still in a wait-and-see mode. When you're in, you're deeply engaged, but if you're not, we're working to bring players back in."

The jump in PC revenues is at least partly attributable to the August launch of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. The latest expansion to Blizzard's flagship MMO sold through 3.4 million copies on launch day, a record for the franchise.
Activision Blizzard's engagement numbers were also down, slipping from 352 million to 345 million monthly active users (MAUs) quarter-over-quarter. King's MAUs dropped from 270 million to 262 million, while Blizzard's held steady at 37 million. Activision's MAUs actually notched up from 45 million to 46 million, and the company said that last month's launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 significantly boosted MAUs, which would be reflected in the company's fourth quarter results.
So very slightly down on the quarter but probably still on for a record year. Nothing concrete on Destiny or WoW numbers - where I still think there's a downward trend on players for the latter even if the expac sold well on day one (otherwise they wouldn't be as quiet).

Read more about the whole Destiny 2 situation this weekend, definitely has that air about it that Destiny 3 will get spat out next year and if it doesn't reverse things the franchise will get mothballed. Sounds like it's in decline
