I am bewildered by the success of the Switch when I look at its catalogue of games. Not that it doesn’t have great games, just so few of them. All personal taste of course.

Presumably a lot of people upgraded from base PS4 to Slim or Pro, or even all three. There might be households with multiple consoles in different rooms, but only one owner, who just signs into PS+ on whichever console is in the room he feels like using.

        Original story: It's been a record-setting year for Take-Two Interactive.Today, the publisher reported its Q4 earnings …

Back again to depress me, GTA5 has now passed 130m lifetime units helping millions upon millions of gamers to rebuy and replay the same installment for the ninth time because the studio won't put out a new one.

Take Two's profits were bumper high once again as RDR2 rode to 31m units sold and Outer Worlds reached 2.5m units. NBA2K20 is on course to be the most successful entry. Borderlands 3 is outselling Borderlands 2 as well by 50%, hitting 10m units so far.

Take Two also expects the next year to be another bumper money earner by... continuing to lean on GTA5, RDR2 etc and releasing little else in what is anticipated to be another 'light year'. There's a slight nod that key new sequels etc might start arriving in 2022/2023 - almost a decade since GTA5 launched.

The hardware sales figures aren't all that great when you think that they've rolled their home and handheld divisions into one medium-sized snowball.

The games, on the other hand. Nintendo are only in this business to sell their software, and they're really, really good at selling games. Even WiiU ones.

To the extent that it makes you wonder what they'll do when they run out of WiiU games for Switch 2

In less than 4 months Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold an eye watering 22.4m copies. Animal Crossing has now already outsold Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Pokemon Sword/Shield and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Software sales hit 50m with AC making up a massive chunk of that, rising 123% on the previous year. Revenue from online sales and subs rose by 230%. The hardware sales are also updated as below:

                  01 - PlayStation 4 - 112.3m
                  02 - Switch - 61.4m
                  03 - Xbox One - 46.3m

And to think that, three console generations ago, they weren't going to release Animal Crossing in Europe and decided that releasing Doshin the Giant instead was a good idea.

The numbers are wild, have to assume their's some knock on from the mobile version there

Also - if you take the WiiU sales for Mario Kart 8 and add them to the new figures for Deluxe the total lifetime sales for Mario Kart 8 now stand at 35.19m

Mario Kart Wii is still the highest selling entry with 37.32m units though is definitely going to lose the crown within the year.

Sony has updated its numbers with PS4 slowing down on hardware but massively up on revenue. Tallies now stand at:

                          01 - PlayStation 4 - 113.6m
                          02 - Switch - 61.4m
                          03 - Xbox One - 48.3m

Sony is circling Playstations highest earning and highest revenue quarters ever

New financials for Q2 from Nintendo paint a rosey picture for their balance sheets, not so much for inspiring them to make new games more ofen though:

                            Highlights:

                            Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
MK8 has now outsold the lifetime tally for Mario Kart Wii to become the highest selling entry in the series ever. The Deluxe edition is now up to 28.99m units sold and on course to outsell Wii on its own by systems end.

                            Animal Crossing: New Horizons
As of the end of September the game has sold an eye watering 26.04m units and is on course to be the Switches most successful game ever.

                            Super Mario 3D All-Stars
In its brief time on sale the collection has shifted 5.21m units

                            Hardware:
The Switch has enjoyed a strong second quarter and even with arguably its weakest winter line up it's set to sell in high numbers over the coming Q3/Q4 quarters with Nintendo predicting 24m additional sales in the coming months.

Lifetime hardware sales now stand at:

                            01 - PlayStation 4 - 113.6m
