A video from Jim Sterling addressing the issue of Tron Evolution no longer being playable thanks to DRM. While this isn't about Loot Boxes or MTX it is another ****ty example from the gaming industry.
It could be a mistake, but as he points out, this could also be the thin end of a wedge as we progress towards Streaming games and not technically owning them.

Yep. This is a big problem that I think is only going to get worse. I probably already brought up a different angle on it but, on iOS, I have a bunch of bought games including Shadowrun that are unplayable and uninstallable. Apple cut off a generation of games and that means that the devs or publishers would have to update them for you to access them in any form and, obviously, some have chosen not to do that. Some aren't even that old. But they're as good as dead and you might have bought them the day before that cull and tough luck.

We still have physical media but for how long? And with day one patches and patches throughout the (sometimes short) lifetime of a game, will they be playable in the future even if you have the physical version? Sometimes not.

And if a service goes down (and no service is guaranteed, even something as giant as Steam), you're shafted. Will they release all your games DRM free on closure? Hardly.

Edit: Oh and as per the example of Tron Evolution, this is a much higher risk with any licensed game because those licenses are essentially rented anyway so devs and publishers can be incredibly limited in what they're allowed to do once those licenses expire.

At a time of year where there will be lots of top 10 lists, this one seemed quite well thought out and well made. Presenting the top 10 worst microtransactions of 2019...

PS. reported post #431 for questionable links being inserted.

Mario Kart is impressive given it hasn't been out for long.

Mario Kart is one of the worst examples of microtransactions, not quite on Dungeon Keeper Mobile levels, but not that far.

"Worst" to the tune of $86 million though.

Interestingly... So some crude maths. Let's assume Nintendo made $20 on every sale of Mario Kart 8 (in both guises). IIRC it's sold nearly 10 million copies, which means you're talking $200 million. It's interesting to see that Mario Kart Tour is on the way to half that, and may equal it in time.

We're never getting a proper F-Zero, are we...

It’s sold 23 million now according to the post SF made in the switch thread today.

But your point totally stands. Look at the cash made from Luigi’s Mansion 3, 5 million copies, versus FE mobile. OK FE has been out longer, but still. It does make you think ‘uh oh’.

It's exactly the thinking Konami had. They realised more money was to be made in mobile games than from any metal gear or silent hill. They've gone further now with slot machines.

Yep, but goodwill from one feeds the other. Nintendo is one of the most solid brands when it comes to games and it’s not because of what they’re putting on phones. That goodwill will last for some time and, yes, it’s entirely possible the draw of that money could move them more and more in that direction but I feel it would be riskier long term. And they’re still building brands and franchises and I wouldn’t be convinced that mobile is the place to do that - mobile is the place you can cash in on them, sure, but I feel like Nintendo need their core systems to keep that all going. It’s the source.

They are squandering that good will though - even Pokémon fans are starting to question things now.
